It wasn’t love at first sight for Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. The Deadpool actor revealed that the couple once went on a double date — with other people — before they began seeing each other. The awkward night out took place nearly one year after they starred in 2011’s Green Lantern.
“We were buddies then. I remember it was funny, because for about a year after Green Lantern had come and gone and all that stuff, we were both single,” Reynolds, 39, told Entertainment Weekly‘s SiriusXM show on Wednesday, February 10.
“We went on a double date. She was on a date with another guy, and I was on a date with another girl — and that was, like, the most awkward date for the respective parties because we were just like fireworks coming across,” he continued. “I think the best way to have a relationship is to start as friends.”
Reynolds and the Gossip Girl alum, 28, have been together ever since. The pair secretly tied the knot in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, in September 2012 and welcomed daughter James in late 2014. On Wednesday, Reynolds also joked about conceiving their first child.
“One of the most common things in the world is making out, having a couple of drinks, and then doing it, and then having a baby. I was perfectly sober for this one, though. I gotta say,” he said. “It’s amazing. I just always marvel how common it is and yet how profound it is. And I always laugh because, you know, celebrities, you always cringe when they talk about their kids. Like, ‘My child is the only one that has ever exited a womb out, ever.'”
The Criminal star is absolutely smitten with his little one. “I truly worship that kid. It’s terrible,” he gushed. “She has me so far wrapped around her finger, it’s dumb. She says ‘Dada,’ and I will walk through a cement wall to get to her.”
