Sandra Lee Undergoes Mastectomy, Shares Surgery Updates on Facebook

Sandra Lee Undergoes Mastectomy, Shares Update After Surgery
Sandra Lee is undergoing a mastectomy, her team shared in a detailed Facebook update on Tuesday, May 19.

Celebrity chef Sandra Lee has successfully undergone a mastectomy on Tuesday, May 19, her team shared in multiple Facebook updates.

The Food Network star, 48, revealed on Good Morning America last week that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April. Luckily, the cancer was detected early while she was getting a routine mammogram. Lee was initially supposed to undergo a double mastectomy last week, but the procedure was delayed after she fell ill with a respiratory infection.

Lee posted late Monday night that she was scheduled for surgery early Tuesday morning. "I am handing my social platform to my fun and fabulous magazine team. They will be sending updates on my progress as well as light, fun ways to make all day, everyday special," she wrote. "Thank you for your well wishes and prayers and I want to wish you a happy few weeks. Love, Sandy."

On Tuesday, her team gave a detailed update on Lee's walk into the hospital with her longtime live-in boyfriend, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

"The day started out in the middle of the night. She was up before 4 a.m. to prep for surgery," her team wrote. "Governor Andrew Cuomo drove Sandra and her sister [Kimberly] to the hospital. She was worrying most about her sister and the nursing staff- making sure they were comfortable. Did Kimmy need a sweater? Were the technicians shoes comfortable enough with so much standing? Did they all have breakfast?"

While at the hospital, she and Gov. Cuomo had a brief chat with doctors before she changed into her surgery gown. "The governor joined her dressed in scrubs – with a neat tie underneath," her team added. "When the medical staff rolled a gurney in to wheel Sandra to the O.R., she said she'd rather walk. And so she did, with the governor by her side down the long hospital corridors. If it's possible to look red-carpet ready in scrubs, they were THAT couple. Once Sandra was in the O.R., Governor Cuomo stayed by her side until she fell asleep, and the surgeons got to work."

During her revelation on GMA, Lee said she was determined to beat her cancer. "My first focus is to get the surgery done and recover," she noted. "After that I'll be all over my sisters and nieces to get tested. I don't care that my niece is 23 years old."
