Christina Grimmie’s family shared the first of her posthumous music videos for her track “Snow White” with Billboard on Thursday, August 11. The YouTube sensation filmed four videos from her EP, Side A, before she was tragically shot and killed by a deranged fan at a meet-and-greet in Orlando on June 10. She was 22.
The video, which was filmed in February prior to her WildFire tour, tells the story of Grimmie’s character, Jessica Blue, as she prepares for a big music showcase and deals with boyfriend problems. Like the fairy tale princess of the title, Grimmie sings about waiting for her prince to finally come and save her.
The former Voice contestant’s manager, Brian Teefey, took to Grimmie’s official Twitter account to reveal the inspiration and story behind “Snow White” on Thursday. “The ‘Ballad of Jessica Blue’ is a retro styled narrative and music video short film. The story follows a young girl’s journey into self-discovery through her love life, her womanhood and her music,” he wrote. “Jessica is torn between boyfriend issues, her creative issues and a general feeling of self-doubt.”
As fans will likely see in the subsequent videos, the story has a happy ending. “Jessica finds her path by doing what she loves,” Teefey (who is also Selena Gomez’s stepfather) continued on Twitter. “She sings from her heart.”
“Everyone worked so hard on this project putting in extra long days on set to ensure we got the best quality project we could for the minimal budget we had,” Teefey said in a previous statement announcing the videos on July 25. “I couldn’t be more proud of her and everyone involved for the labor of love that was put into this project.”
A new video will be released every Thursday for three weeks: “Anybody’s You” will premiere on August 18, “Deception” on August 25 and “Without Him” on September 1.
