Based on a previously unpublished chapter from Colin Clark's memoir The Prince, the Showgirl and Me, the film is set in Oxford, England in early summer 1956, when Monroe (then newly married to playwright Arthur Miller) was shooting The Prince and the Showgirl with Sir Lawrence Olivier. When husband Miller briefly left the country, set assistant Clark (played by Eddie Redmayne) escorted the troubled, besieged movie star for a fun, idyllic week away from Hollywood and all its pressures. Monroe died six years later in 1962 at age 36.

Oscar nominee Williams, 31, relished the chance to play Monroe. "It felt like being reborn," she told Vogue. "It felt like breaking my body and remaking it in her image, learning how she walked and talked and held her head. None of that existed in my physical memory, and I knew I needed as much time as possible to make it part of me. I wish that I could play her for the rest of my life."
