“During an emotional and vulnerable time earlier this year, I began speaking with someone online who turned out to be not who they said they were,” Brown tells Us in a statement. “I never met this person and I regret being drawn into this situation, but I hope because of it I can help others who find themselves in similar circumstances.”

Meri, 44, ended up creating an emotional connection with a woman posing as a man online.

Meri was the first wife of polygamist Kody Brown, and announced on the show in February her intention to divorce him decades after they tied the knot. She is mom to daughter Mariah, and Kody has attributed Meri’s support as being the reason he eventually wed his three other wives.

“Meri bonded with Janelle and Christine before it was a thought in my mind,” Kody said in a clip from the TLC show.

Despite their split earlier this year, Meri maintains that her husband, sister wives, and their children have all been there for her during this difficult time.
