Only human. Taraji P. Henson took to Instagram on Friday, March 27, to walk back an earlier statement and apologize to those involved.
The celebrated Empire actress, 44, shared a photo of text, addressing a story from this week about her son Marcel and issues of racial profiling that he has faced. In an interview with Uptown magazine, Henson said that she is sending her son to Howard University after he had multiple run-ins with cops.
"My child has been racially profiled," she said at the time. "He was in Glendale, California and did exactly everything the cops told him to do, including letting them illegally search his car. It was bogus because they didn’t give him the ticket for what he was pulled over for."
In the days since her words went public, Henson has faced a conflicting account from the Glendale police force. Footage obtained by the Los Angeles Times shows an incident with Marcel in which race may not have played a part.
"I would like to publicly apologize to the office and the Glendale Police Department," Henson wrote, following the footage. "A mother's job is not easy and neither is a police officer's."
"Sometimes as humans WE overreact without gathering all of the facts. As a mother in this case I overreacted and for that I apologize. Thank you to that officer for being kind to my son. Love, Taraji P. Henson."
