Making friends with Hollywood. Ted Cruz dipped his toes into the celebrity pool during a presidential campaign rally on Friday, February 19, suggesting that his pal and Duck Dynasty star, Phil Robertson, might make a good U.N. ambassador.

“You know what? There is a reason he terrifies the mainstream media,” Cruz, 45, told the crowd. “He says things you’re not supposed to say. He actually remembers who we are as Americans and he speaks it with a joy. Not with an anger, not with a hatred — with a joy in who we are.”

The GOP presidential hopeful added that he thought it would be especially funny to watch the representatives from other countries try to respond to the controversial reality personality’s fiery rhetoric.

“Imagine, for a second, Phil Robertson, ambassador to the United Nations,” he continued as his supporters laughed and clapped. “How much would you pay to see the Russian ambassador’s face when Phil says, ‘What is wrong with you people?’”

Robertson previously has made headlines for his comments about social issues, including calling same-sex marriage “evil” and “wicked.”

Cruz’s friendship with Robertson, 69, is nothing new.

The reality star — who gave a 13-minute speech during Cruz’s campaign stop Friday — expressed his support for Cruz in a duck-hunting video in January.

“My qualifications for president of the United States are rather narrow,” Robertson says in the video. “Is he or she godly, does he or she love us, can he or she do the job and finally — would they kill a duck and put him in a pot and make him a good duck gumbo? I’ve looked at the candidates. Ted Cruz is my man. He fits the bill.”
