Meow! Kanye West introduced the world to a new vixen during the 2016 MTV VMAs on Sunday, August 28. The rapper placed the spotlight on Teyana Taylor, a 25-year-old Harlem-born singer who works her stuff in West’s new “Fade” music video, which he debuted during the awards show.
Taylor, however, isn’t new the entertainment world. The singer previously appeared in Jay Z’s 2007 video for “Blue Magic” and much more. Below are five things to know about her:
1. She’s a singer.
Taylor has worked with West before. The dancer provided vocals to the rapper’s earlier hits “Dark Fantasy” and “Hell of a Life.” She’s also signed to his GOOD Music label and Def Jam.
2. She’s engaged to an NBA pro.
Taylor is engaged to Cleveland Cavaliers player Iman Shumpert, who also appears in the video. The athlete popped the question to Taylor in November 2015. “Thank You @imanshumpert for putting the color back in my life! I love you so much,“ she captioned an Instagram photo of her engagement ring at the time. The duo are parents of daughter Iman.
3. She made headlines after welcoming their daughter.
Taylor made headlines after she shared her daughter’s birth story on Instagram in December 2015. According to the singer, who shared her baby girl’s birth story in an Instagram post on December 17, she had no idea she was in labor until she woke up at 6 a.m. With the help of Shumpert — and a pair of headphones — she bravely welcomed Iman Tayla on the bathroom floor.
4. She’s close with MTV.
The singer was featured on MTV long before she got down and sweaty in West’s “Fade” video. Taylor’s ’80s-themed birthday party was featured on My Super Sweet 16.
5. She’s already a chart-topper.
Her debut studio album, VII, hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in 2014, and she’s currently working on her second studio album. In June, her single “Freak On” with Chris Brown was released.
