Late U.S. senator John McCain was honored with a star-studded funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, September 1, one week after his death. A private burial will occur on Sunday, September 2, following a private service at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Putting on a Brave Face

Cindy McCain, who wed the senator in 1980, offered a slight grin as she arrived. She mourned the loss of her husband in a statement to Twitter on August 25. “My heart is broken,” she tweeted. “I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years. He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the the place he loved best.”

Paying Respects

Though McCain ranked ninth in political joke targets for Leno during his time hosting The Tonight Show, the senator praised the comedian prior to his exit from the late-night show in 2014. Leno, in turn, was seen attending McCain's memorial.

Joe Biden gave a tearful eulogy at McCain’s memorial service in Arizona on Thursday. “My name is Joe Biden. I’m a Democrat, and I love John McCain,” he said. “But the way I look at it, the way I thought about it, was that I always thought of John as a brother. We had a hell of a lot of family fights. We go back a long way.”

McCain wrote a final message, released on Monday, August 27, urging Americans to unite and taking aim at President Donald Trump. “We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe,” he wrote. “We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been.”
