Every Time Britney Spears’ Ex Sam Asghari Supported Her

Britney Spears has been able to count on ex Sam Asghari when the going gets tough.

Spears and Asghari began dating in 2016 after meeting on the set of her “Slumber Party” music video. After going public with their relationship the following year, Asghari has shown his support for Spears time and time again.

“Several people in Britney’s life were iffy about Sam in the beginning of their relationship and worried that he was a fame-seeking opportunist and an enabler,” an insider exclusively told Us Weekly in February 2021. “They kept a very close eye on Britney at first to make sure that was not the case.”

Following her public mental breakdown and split from Kevin Federline after two years of marriage, Spears was placed under a conservatorship in February 2008. Her father, Jamie Spears, was made the primary conservator in 2019 after attorney Andrew Wallet abruptly stepped down from his duties. Jamie temporarily relinquished his role later that year to licensed fiduciary Jodi Montgomery due to health issues.

In the wake of the New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears in February 2021, Agshari spoke out in Spears’ defense and slammed her father for being a “total dick.” He also claimed that Jamie has tried to “control” the couple’s relationship. Spears was released from the conservatorship in November 2021. 

Asghari proposed to Britney in September 2021 after five years of dating. The pair wed in June 2022 but called it quits after just 14 months of marriage. Asghari filed for divorce in August 2023. Despite their split, Asghari shared via his rep at the time that he “has always and will always support” Spears.

Slamming 'Disgusting' TMZ Documentary

Asghari slammed TMZ's documentary Britney Spears: The Price of Freedom, which focuses on the pop star's life post-conservatorship, ahead of its premiere on Fox in May 2023.

“I found it absolutely disgusting for the people who were in her life when she didn’t have a voice, they went and told her story like it was theirs,” he said via his Instagram Story. “All of a sudden — after 15 years when she’s free after all those gaslighting, all those things that went down — now you’re going to put her under a microscope and tell her story?"

The personal trainer then urged his followers not to "believe what you read online."

Britney’s In ‘Full Control’ of Her Life

After multiple reports in February 2023 claimed that Britney’s inner circle staged an intervention on her behalf, Asghari denied the rumors.

“An intervention did not occur. My wife is in full control of her life and will continue to make all decisions involving her care regardless of circumstances. Speculation on her health is inappropriate and should end immediately,” the Hacks alum told Access Hollywood in a statement at the time.

The Crossroads star, for her part, also denied the speculation in a lengthy Instagram message. “It makes me sick to my stomach that it’s even legal for people to make up stories that I almost died … I mean at some point enough is enough !!!” she wrote.

Calling Out Kevin Federline’s Tell-All Interviews

Federline opened up about his ups and downs with Britney in a series of August 2022 interviews, which did not amuse Asghari.

“I wish him the best and hope he has a more positive outlook in the future for [the] benefit of all involved,” the Iran native wrote via his Instagram Story at the time. “But for now: Keep my wife’s name … out your mouth.”

Not A Fan of Documentaries

Amid the singer’s conservatorship battle, a series of bombshell documentaries were released about her legal drama. 

“Past docs left bad aftertaste. I’m hopeful this one will be respective,” Asghari wrote via Instagram Story in September 2021, referring to Netflix’s program. “I don’t blame CNN, BBC or NETFLIX ([which] got me thru lockdowns [praying hands emoji] for airing them because as an actor I tell other people’s stories too. … I question producers who made them ‘just to shed light’ without input or approval from subject. Any credit for light being shed should go to #freebritney [red heart emoji].”

Signs of Support

The Hacks actor shared a selfie wearing a “Free Britney” shirt to his Instagram story just hours before his girlfriend was set to address the court regarding her conservatorship battle on June 23, 2021.

In Her Corner

After the "Framing Britney Spears" documentary dropped in February 2021, Asghari denounced Britney’s father for his role in her conservatorship. “Now it’s important for people to understand that I have zero respect for someone trying to control our relationship and constantly throwing obstacles our way,” he wrote via his Instagram Stories. “In my opinion, Jamie is a total dick. I won’t be going into details because I’ve always respected our privacy but at the same time I didn’t come to this country to not be able to express my opinion and freedom.”

Biggest Cheerleader

“I have always wanted nothing but the best for my better half and will continue to support her following her dreams and creating the future she wants and deserves,” he told Entertainment Tonight in February 2021 after the documentary dropped. “I am thankful for all of the love and support she is receiving from her fans all over the world, and I am looking forward to a normal, amazing future together.”

Coming to Her Defense

Asghari promptly hit back at author Kelly Oxford in September 2020 when she said that Britney’s Instagram is “too scary” because of one of the singer’s video uploads. “What’s so scary about being the biggest superstar in the world being herself (authentic, funny, humble) without caring what others think,” he replied. “We need more people like her and less Karen’s. Also Instagram installed this button that you can hit to unfollow about 10 years ago …”

Wishing Her Well

In February 2020, the dancer took to Instagram to express hope for the singer’s speedy recovery after she suffered an injury. “When you break something it tends to heal stronger specially [sic] when you’re my Girl👌🏽,” he wrote alongside a silly couple’s selfie and footage of her cast. “My lioness broke her metatarsal bone on her foot doing what she loves which is dancing 💃 Wishing her the best recovery so she can jump, run, and dance her butt off 💪🏽 #stronger.”

Totally in Awe

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in September 2019, he raved about how his then-girlfriend is inspirational. “What I love the most about my relationship is the fact that it's so normal. It's not glamorous or anything,” he said at the time. “She inspires me in my work and I can give so much to her by going to the gym, by going to work, by having a balanced life. We can get inspired by each other here and there and really grow with each other.”

Loving a Strong Woman

Around the time that the “Womanizer” singer checked into a mental health facility in April 2019, Asghari reshared her Instagram post about self-care along with the caption, “It isn’t weakness, It’s a sign of absolute strength, people should only be inspired by this, at least I am ♥️ #stronger.”

Motivating Each Other

The personal trainer told Us exclusively in September 2019 how the former couple push each other to stay fit. “You have to stay on top of that. When it comes to our busy schedules, both of us, we try to support each other as best as we can,” he explained.

From Lover to Ex

After Asghari filed for divorce from Spears in August 2023, he claimed via his rep that he “has always and will always support” the pop star.  

“After 6 years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together,” Asghari wrote via his Instagram Story at the time. “We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always.”
