Toxic? Britney Spears’ family, especially her parents and her siblings, has been under a microscope amid her conservatorship battle. The Grammy winner was born in Mississippi in December 1981 to father Jamie Spears and mother Lynne Spears. She joined older brother Bryan Spears and later became a big sister to Jamie Lynn Spears. Britney, with the help of her family, pursued stardom from an early age. She appeared on Star Search and The Mickey Mouse Club before breaking out with her debut album, …Baby One More Time, in 1999. The singer’s acclaim only grew as she racked up hit after hit, but amid a series of personal issues, she was placed under a conservatorship in 2008. Jamie and attorney Andrew Wallet took over as co-conservators at the time, making personal and financial decisions for Britney. Wallet abruptly resigned in March 2019, leaving Jamie as the sole conservator. However, Jamie then temporarily stepped down from his position as conservator of Britney’s person in September 2019 amid health problems and an alleged altercation with his daughter’s eldest son, Preston. Licensed fiduciary Jodi Montgomery assumed the role in Jamie’s absence, though he remained the conservator of Britney’s estate. Her attorney Samuel Ingham III filed a request in September 2020 to instate Bessemer Trust Company as the conservator of Britney’s estate. A judge approved the appointment of Bessemer Trust in November 2020 but determined that Jamie would remain co-conservator of the estate. Bessemer Trust filed an emergency application in July 2021 to resign from Britney’s case. Britney broke her silence on the conservatorship drama and her family’s involvement during a June 2021 court hearing. “I just want my life back. It’s been 13 years, and it’s enough. It’s been a long time since I’ve owned my money,” she said. “And it’s my wish and my dream for all of this to end without being tested.” She added: “I would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you. Britney Spears

The Princess of Pop made her mark with a slew of hit songs, successful world tours and a Las Vegas residency. As of February 2021, Forbes reported that her net worth was $60 million. While she once worked nonstop, Britney’s lawyer revealed in November 2020 that she “will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career.”  

Britney spoke for herself during a June 2021 court hearing, publicly stating for the first time her desire to end her conservatorship.

Jamie Spears

Britney’s father was married to Debbie Sanders Cross before tying the knot with Lynne in July 1976. Lynne filed for divorce in 1980, requesting a temporary restraining order at the time. However, the couple reconciled and welcomed Britney in 1981. They divorced in May 2002 but got back together in 2010, though they never remarried. They seemingly separated in 2020.  

Jamie went to rehab for alcohol issues in 2004. He suffered a health scare in November 2018 when he was hospitalized for a ruptured colon.  

Prior to serving as Britney’s conservator, Jamie worked as a welder in the 1970s, had a construction business in the ‘80s and opened a spa with Lynne in the ‘80s.  

Us Weekly confirmed in September 2019 that Kevin Federline — the father of Britney’s sons, Preston and Jayden — was granted a restraining order that prevented Jamie from seeing his grandsons for three years following an alleged altercation with Preston.  

Britney lashed out at her father at the June 2021 hearing, claiming that he “should be in jail” for “punishing” her via the conservatorship. Jamie has denied any wrongdoing.

Lynne Spears

Lynne was married to Jamie from 1976 to 2002. She owned and operated a daycare in Louisiana and worked as a teacher. She cowrote two books with Britney: 2000’s Heart to Heart and 2001’s A Mother’s Gift. She released her memoir, Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World, in 2008. 

Lynne stepped into the conservatorship battle in July 2020 when she requested to be involved in decisions related to her daughter’s finances. Jamie claimed in court documents obtained by Us in April 2021 that his ex-wife had “zero involvement in her daughter’s conservatorship until very recently.” 

Lynne admitted to the New Yorker in July 2021 that she had “mixed feelings” about the conservatorship, adding: “It’s a lot of pain, a lot of worry.”

Bryan Spears

Jamie and Lynne’s eldest child was born in April 1977. He majored in kinesiology at Southeastern Louisiana University, his mom’s alma mater. Bryan began working as a manager for his family after Britney became famous. He also served as a producer on several of sister Jamie Lynn’s projects, including Zoey 101. 

Bryan married Graciella Sanchez in 2009, but she filed for divorce in August 2015. They share daughter Lexie.  

Bryan spoke out about the conservatorship in July 2020, insisting on the “As Not Seen on TV” podcast that it has “been a great thing for our family, to this point, and [we] keep hoping for the best.”

Jamie Lynn Spears

Jamie and Lynne’s youngest child was born in April 1991. She became a star in her own right while playing the lead on Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101 from 2005 to 2008. She pursued a country music career in 2013 and began appearing on Sweet Magnolias in 2020.  

Jamie Lynn took a step back from the spotlight after she announced in 2007 that she was pregnant with her first child at age 16. She welcomed daughter Maddie in June 2008 with ex-fiancé Casey Aldridge. The actress married Jamie Watson in March 2014, and their daughter, Ivey, arrived in April 2018. 

Jamie Lynn showed support for Britney in June 2021, saying in Instagram Story videos that she has “nothing to gain or lose either way” from the conservatorship as she is Britney’s “sister who is only concerned about her happiness.” She noted the following month that "everyone has the right to express themselves, but can we please stop with the death threats, especially the death threats to children." 

A New Yorker article published in July 2021 claimed that Jamie Lynn is the only member of the “Gimme More” singer’s immediate family who is not on her payroll, which Jamie Lynn confirmed via her Instagram Story. "Facts....now leave my broke-ass alone," she wrote.

Preston Federline

Britney and ex-husband Kevin, whom she was married to from 2004 to 2007, welcomed their first son, Sean Preston, in September 2005.  

The exes had a 50-50 custody agreement before Preston’s alleged altercation with Jamie, after which Britney got her sons 30 percent of the time and Kevin had them the other 70 percent. 

Kevin reacted to his ex-wife’s court statement in June 2021. “The best thing would be for their mom to be healthy and happy. And if either of those things aren’t true, it doesn’t provide for the best setting for custody to be exercised,” his lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan said in a statement. “[Kevin] certainly respects Britney and only hopes [for] the best for her because when the best for her is achieved, it’s the best for the kids. The kids love their mother and he wants there to be a healthy and strong relationship.”

Jayden Federline

Britney and Kevin’s second son, Jayden James, arrived in September 2006. 

Jayden made headlines in March 2020 for an Instagram Live rant about his mother, during which he called Jamie “a pretty big d--k.” The DJ’s attorney told Us at the time that “Kevin is handling it like a responsible parent.”
