Rihanna and Drake’s on-again, off-again relationship kept fans on their toes all year — culminating, perhaps, in the rapper’s very public profession of love for the “Needed Me” singer at the MTV Video Music Awards in August. But the pair officially called off their relationship in October after dating on and off for seven years.
Mariah Carey and James Packer called off their whirlwind romance and engagement in late October following an apparently disastrous trip to Greece, where the Australian billionaire reportedly pulled the plug on the relationship. The pair, who met on the set of Bachelor in Paradise on season 3 this year, got engaged on the series finale, which aired in September.
Five years after Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney first met on the set of her “You and I” music video, the couple ended their relationship — and their engagement — for good. An insider told Us that the singer “was really crushed” by the July split, but that distance had pulled the duo apart. They got engaged in February 2015 after splitting briefly in May 2012.
Ah, young love. Bella Hadid and The Weeknd (ne Abel Tesfaye) decided to end their nearly two-year relationship in November after their demanding schedules got the best of them. “They still have a great deal of love and respect for each other and will remain friends, but it has been too hard to coordinate their schedules with him finishing and promoting his upcoming album,” a source close to the “Starboy” crooner told Us. In late November, the pair crossed paths at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, where The Weeknd performed and Hadid walked the runway, giving him major side-eye.
A duo no longer. Brooklyn Beckham and Chloë Grace Moretz split up after a little over two years of dating, in September, a source confirmed to Us Weekly. The Little Mermaid actress and David and Victoria Beckham’s oldest son first met at a SoulCycle class in August 2014, and only publicly admitted to dating in May of 2016.
Justin’s back on the market! Justin Bieber and his girlfriend, Sofia Richie, called it quits on their relationship in September, just six weeks after first stepping out together in August. Bieber seemed to be serious about the brunette beauty, even deleting his Instagram account at one point to support Nicole Richie’s younger model sister after fans bombarded the couple in the comments section of his photos.
Time’s up! Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart seemed to be done for good in August after nearly five years of dating (the pair were first linked as a couple back in November 2011), with the iconic entertainer posting a cryptic photo to Instagram of herself standing in front of graffiti reading “Protect Yo Heart.” The former couple split up once before, in June 2014, before reconciling shortly afterward.
Tobey Maguire and jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer had some serious “soul searching” to do when they opted to end their marriage after nine years together. “As devoted parents, or first priority remains raising our children together with enduring love, respect and friendship,” the pair told Us in a joint statement. Adding that the decision was “not sudden” and there was “no drama.”
No wedding bells in the New Year! Ryan Phillippe and his fiancee, Paulina Slagter, decided to go their separate ways and call off their engagement in November, a source confirmed to Us. The pair got engaged last Christmas after making their red carpet debut in May 2012.
Another one of Hollywood’s beloved couples, done. Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts issued a joint statement in September telling fans that they had decided to part ways after 11 years together (and two sons, Samuel and Alexander). “Over the past few months we’ve come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple,” they said in the statement. “It is with great love, respect and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship.”
Bulk up to break up. Hilary Duff and her trainer boyfriend, Jason Walsh, decided to part ways after several months of dating in late November. The former Disney star and Walsh were last spotted at a star-studded Halloween party in Beverly Hills in October.
In July, Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson announced their split after 10 years together. “Diane Kruger and Josh Jackson have decided to separate and remain friends,” reps for both stars told Us. The Troy actress and the Dawson’s Creek alum never married during their decade-long relationship because they’re “not religious,” Jackson told Glamour in 2014.
Marc Anthony and wife Shannon De Lima have split after two years of marriage a source confirmed to Us Weekly on Friday, November 18. "It just was not working and they didn't have enough in common," the insider told Us.
