They’ll always have Step Up. Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan announced in a joint statement in April 2018 that they have separated after nearly nine years of marriage. Take a look back with Us Weekly at the former couple’s relationship.
Tatum and Dewan first met on the set of the film Step Up, in which they played the onscreen couple Tyler Gage and Nora Clark. They hit it off immediately during their first audition — and it was all caught on camera. “It’s very sentimental and amazing for me to watch,” the actress said of the tape in February 2018.
The pair walked the red carpet together at the Step Up premiere in Los Angeles, a few months after the Magic Mike actor officially asked her out. “He went out partying with a bunch of dancers. His room was right above mine, and he came down drunk with a sombrero on, banging on my door,” she recalled in a December 2016 interview with Cosmopolitan. “He was like, ‘I couldn’t stop thinking about you. Let’s do this. I just want to be with you.’ From that point forward, we were together.”
The movie stars tied the knot at Church Estate Vineyards in Malibu in front of more than 200 guests, including maid of honor Emmanuelle Chirqui and bridesmaid Haylie Duff. The newlyweds exchanged Neil Lane rings and held hands as they walked down the aisle after the ceremony.
The couple became the parents of their first and only child, a daughter named Everly. The baby was born in London. “Watching [Dewan] in those first days transform into a mother was life changing,” Tatum recalled on Instagram in May 2016 in honor of Everly’s third birthday. “She was every bit the beautiful, sexy, funny, flawed creature I fell in love with. But the prism turned and showed a whole new light that I had no idea existed, the light of a mother’s love.”
Tatum and Dewan squared off during a hilarious episode of Lip Sync Battle. He went all-out with renditions of “Let It Go” from Frozen and Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls),” the latter of which even included a surprise cameo from Queen Bey herself. Meanwhile, cohosts LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen went wild over Dewan’s Magic Mike-inspired performance of Ginuwine’s “Pony.”
Dewan opened up in a no-holds-barred interview with Cosmopolitan about her sex life with Tatum. “We definitely have a very happy and healthy [sex life],” she said. “Something about being a dancer connects you to your physical body. It’s primal, earthy, sexual energy by nature. You feel your body in a certain way. Channing is very much the same way. He’s very in tune with that.”
The Supergirl alum told Us Weekly exclusively why she and her husband’s marriage works. “I think we just care about things other than what our job and career is, and that keeps a sense of groundedness,” she said. “I believe in the divinity of life and I believe in the flow, and as long as you’re aligning in that way, it works.”
Tatum and Dewan announced on their social media accounts that they had called it quits. “We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now,” they said in a joint statement. “There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision — just two best friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible. We are still a family and will always be loving, dedicated parents to Everly.”
