Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s Love Story: A Look at Their Romance Over the Years

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been going strong for decades, proving that Hollywood romances can last. The duo met in 1966, but they didn't start dating until they collaborated on 1983’s Swing Shift. Prior to their romance, Russell was married to Season Hubley from 1979 to 1983 while Hawn went through two of her own divorces. First, she was married to Gus Trinkonis from 1969 to 1976 and then to Bill Hudson, with whom she shares children Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson, from 1976 to 1982. [jwplayer gs5bAELB-zhNYySv2] Despite sharing decades together and welcoming son Wyatt Russell in 1986, the two have no plans to tie the knot after experiencing the difficulties of divorce. “[Divorce is] always ugly,” she told CNN in July 2023. “Somebody actually has to take a look and say, ‘How many divorces actually are fun? How many divorces actually don’t cost money? How many divorces actually make you hate the person more than you did before? How many divorces have hurt children?’” She added, "I like the idea that I can wake up in the morning and make decisions every day if I want to be here. ... I think ultimately staying independent with independent thinking is important, so you can hold on to yourself, and you can actually have that feeling." 1966: Their Meet-Cute

Kurt and Hawn first met while filming The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1966. The Massachusetts native was 16, and Hawn was 21. "I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young,” the Snatched actress told BBC Radio 4 in 2012. “Then, years later, we met up again, and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. We both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell."

1983: Costars Reunite and Never Part

It wasn’t until they were reunited on screen for 1983’s Swing Shift that the pair became an item. "It was the first time she brought him to the house, it wasn't the first date,” Kate recalled during a November 2019 episode of her “Sibling Revelry” podcast with brother Oliver about her mom’s early relationship with Kurt. "Mom said that's when she fell in love with Kurt — right away was because she brought him back to the house and we had already been asleep, and we shared a room, and he sat down next to each of us, he sat down next to you first and watched you sleep and then came by."

1986: Growing Family

On July 10, 1986, the duo welcomed their only child, son Wyatt Russell, bringing their tally of children to four between them. Kurt shares son Boston with his ex-wife, Season Hubley, and Hawn shares Oliver and Kate with ex-husband Bill Hudson.

1987: Onscreen Lovers Once More

A year after becoming parents, the sweethearts returned to the big screen to play unlikely lovers Joanna and Dean in Overboard. In 2017, Hawn revealed that she and Kurt had watched the iconic movie for the first time in a while and it helped remind her about their beautiful romance. “You know how sometimes you forget why you fell in love? I remembered everything, and why I fell in love,” she said on The Late Late Show With James Corden at the time. “It was really something to be able to watch that."

1989: Oscar-Worthy Couple

The couple that laughs together, stays together! When presenting at the 1989 Academy Awards, Hawn kicked things off by saying, “We fit in completely to the theme of the show. Because we’re costars, we’re compadres, we’re companions and we’re a couple.” The Tango & Cash actor responded, “There’s only one thing we’re not … married,” to which his partner asked, “Is that a proposal?” the Hateful Eight actor appeared as if he was going to pop the question before saying, “You’re putting me on the spot. I guess now’s as good a time as any to answer that — oh, they want us to speed things up, listen, we’ll talk about it later tonight.” Hawn made a face and the audience laughed.

1990: The Lucky Ones

“If you’re lucky enough to have someone like Goldie Hawn come along and feel the way she feels, you’re just lucky,” the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star said about his forever gal.

2000s: No. 1 Fan for Life

After going on a filming hiatus following 2002’s The Banger Sisters, Hawn didn’t skip a beat when supporting her man at all of his red-carpet premieres over the years including Miracle, Sky High, Furious 7 and Deepwater Horizon.

2003: Paying It Forward

In 2003, the Washington D.C. native launched The Hawn Foundation, which focuses on providing kids with social and emotional learning programs to enable them to thrive as adults. Since its inception, the mother of three has hosted the annual Goldie’s Love In for Kids charity event and promoted its MindUP program.

2007: Setting the Record Straight

“We have done just perfectly without marrying. I already feel devoted and isn't that what marriage is supposed to do? So as long as my emotional state is in a state of devotion, honesty, caring and loving, then we're fine,” the HouseSitter actress told Woman’s Day in 2007. “We both have independent finances, we're both independently well-off. We have raised our children brilliantly; they are beautiful people. We did a great job there and we didn't have to get married to do that. I like waking up every day and seeing that he is there and knowing that I have a choice. There is really no reason to marry.”

2008: Branching Out

The Vanilla Sky actor launched his wine label, GoGi Wines, in 2008 and named it after one of his old nicknames as a child. He also opened the Wine Saloon in Los Alamos, California, as his wine tasting room. “I had no question about what I wanted to do. I think that’s one of the most important things in winemaking. It’s like filmmaking; you gotta know what you want to do. If you know what you want to do, then you can go about doing it,” the Tombstone star told Wine Enthusiast magazine in 2014 of the venture.

2015: Making Love Last

“A lasting relationship isn’t about marriage. It’s about compatibility and communication. And you both need to want it to work,” Hawn told Porter in 2015. “If one person does not want it to work, it isn’t going to work. Intention is the key. It’s also about not losing yourself in each other. The couple received side by side stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 4, 2017, further cementing their linked careers and life. “To you, I owe my wonderful life. 2018: Doting Grandparents

“Grandma and Grandpa duty...or should I say Mr and Mrs Claus 🤶🎅 #IKnewIt,” Kate wrote via Instagram in December 2018 on a sweet photo of the couple nurturing their newest granddaughter, Rani, who was born on October 2, 2018. The pair are also grandparents to the Almost Famous actress’ two sons, Ryder and Bingham, Oliver's three kids, Wilder, Bodhi and Rio, and Wyatt's son, Buddy, whom he shares with wife Meredith Hagner. The pair confirmed in March 2021 that they had welcomed their little one after their Vogue April shoot.

2018: Perfect Christmas Gift

For the first time since 1987’s Overboard, the pair reunited on screen in 2018 for Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The couple are reprising their roles in the sequel, which is slated for a 2020 release.

2020: Holiday Lovebirds

The twosome teamed up again for The Christmas Chronicles 2, which hit Netflix in November 2020.

“It was actually a great break from everyday life and a new way of being together, which was great," she gushed to Fox News about filming the sequel. “[We] considered it almost like a honeymoon, to tell you the truth, and working together was really fun."

2021: Loving Looks

The Banger Sisters actress toasted Russell’s 70th birthday in March 2021 with a sweet Instagram tribute. “Happy birthday baby! What a wild ride,” she wrote alongside a clip of the duo joking about not being married at the 1989 Oscars. “No, we never got married but one thing that continues to grow is our love. You’re a wild one, brilliant, lovable, childlike, perfectly maddening, a father supreme and deeply funny! I can’t imagine my life without you at any age, Kurt Russell. You’re the catch. Hawn gave her partner a shout-out via Instagram in October 2022 after attending their granddaughter Rani’s princess-themed birthday bash. “Happy 4th birthday our precious Rani Rose🌹You are the real queen!” the Housesitter actress captioned a group snap. “I’ll take Lady in waiting everyday as long as the prince is always beside me! 2023: An Enduring Love Story

The Snatched actress gushed about her longtime partner in her Variety cover story, which was published in March 2023. “Kurt is extraordinarily brilliant and creative and collaborative — not in the kitchen,” Hawn told the outlet. “But really he’s just amazing. … Kurt and I are very similar. He doesn’t consider himself a movie star. Nor do I. Neither one of us walks around thinking about that stuff.”

Russell, for his part, echoed his love’s sentiments as he addressed longstanding pressure to get married.

“At that time, we constantly got asked, ‘When are you going to get married? Why aren’t you married?’” he recalled after they floated the idea at the Oscars in 1989, in which they presented the Best Director category together. "And we were like, ‘Why does anybody care about that?’ We’d asked our kids if they cared about it. They didn’t. We didn’t.”
