Jana Kramer and Mike Caussin Get Honest About Cheating, Regaining Trust and More in New Book

It's been quite an up and down journey for Jana Kramer and Mike Caussin. While the pair have become stronger through it all, they hope that in writing their new memoir, The Good Fight, they'll be able to help others. That doesn't mean that they're not nervous about the release. "We put so much into this because it is so personal. This is the most personal thing we’ve done — even more so than this podcast," Caussin, 33, said during the "Whine Down" podcast on Monday, September 21, with Kramer, 36. "It’s just very personal to us. We’ve both taken a lot of pride in it. We have big goals with this book, big expectations because of how much work we’ve put into it so you know, for me, I’ve voiced this a lot to you I really want to be a New York Times bestseller. I really do. And I hope all of you listening can help us achieve that." [jwplayer tH1nIMZ5] The couple married in 2015, 11 months after meeting. In January 2016, they welcomed their first daughter, Jolie, but soon split following the news that he had cheated with multiple women. The former NFL star entered treatment for sex addiction and the "I Got the Boy" singer and the athlete reconciled soon after. They renewed their vows in December 2017 and welcomed a son, Jace, in November 2018. Over the years, they've been very open about Caussin's infidelity, her choice to forgive him and everything in between. During Monday's podcast, the ACM winner also revealed that she's fearful about being judged from what she revealed in the book, especially if they split in the future. "What if something happens and then, let’s say, we end up getting divorced?" Kramer asked on the episode. "Well, where is the success for the person that reads this book? ... I guess that’s my grand fear because I want someone to have hope. I really want that and it makes me sad to think about. I don’t want to be the reason for someone to lose hope." Connecting Quick

The pair said "I love you" to one another in less than two weeks of knowing each other and moved in after three months. "I jokingly said that I hoped we wouldn't be one of those couples who fight all the time," he revealed. "In that moment, I s--t you not, we both smiled, looked into each other's eyes, and actually said to one another at the same time, 'But what will we ever fight about?'"

Fear of Being Alone

Both Caussin and Kramer opened up about their childhoods and their parent's relationships, which affected them both. Kramer's father began a new family after he and her mother's split, causing the singer to "constantly want validation from men" throughout her life.

Meanwhile, the athlete shut down at 16 after getting his heartbroken. "I've dated only a few women in my life. Most of my relationships can be more described as 'talking to,' which essentially means we were sleeping together but I never committed enough to get my feelings involved," he wrote. "And when I did commit, I inevitably cheated. I couldn't be alone."

Losing Himself

After marrying Kramer shortly after leaving the NFL, Caussin went from being known as an athlete to being known as the crooner's husband, something that caused him to lose his "sense of self and identity" overall. The Virginia native explained that while many pro athletes have a hard time adjusting, he said there was an "added layer" since Kramer is famous. "Now, I loved and still love being Jana's husband, but early in the relationship I had no idea who I was anymore."

Being a ‘Sex Addict’

Caussin also detailed the term "sex addict," which he was labeled after their first split. "I want to be very clear about something: society has had the nerve to call sex addiction a 'married man's excuse' to which I say bulls--t," he wrote. "Addiction is not an excuse at all, and I make sure to never use it as such. However, it is an explanation."

Finding a Way to Trust

Now, after a split, a vow renewal and a lot of therapy, the Christmas in Mississippi actress trusts her husband. "I see him showing up as a father and a husband, and I see his words matching his actions. How he is showing up looks different than before, which helps me trust him," she wrote.

'Dancing With the Stars' Flings

While competing on Dancing With the Stars in 2016, Kramer was briefly separated from Caussin and had some "flings and flirts," something she wasn't sure she wanted to mention in the book. "I never truly thought I did anything wrong. Correction. I knew it was wrong; I just didn't want to be the bad guy. I justified my actions in my mind just as I suppose Mike had done all along too," she wrote, before adding that being on the ABC competition series "prolonged our suffering and delayed our healing."

Communication

One secret to their successful relationship? Communication. In fact, the duo has nightly check-ins called FANOS, which stands for feelings, affirmations, needs, own and sobriety.

"They provide a neutral ground for us to discuss whatever may be going on," the pair wrote. "We're able to set aside feelings of defensiveness and listen from a supportive, loving place. Doing them has helped us be in real time more than we ever thought we were capable of."
