Miley Cyrus has been outspoken about an assortment of issues, from her political beliefs to her recreational drug use. However, it's her honest remarks about her sexuality that stand out from the pack. Wasn’t It Obvious?

Miley cited a throwback photo of herself, Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato and Hannah Montana costar Emily Osment as proof that fans should’ve known she was bisexual long before she came out.

In an August 2023 TikTok video, she displayed the squad photo which shows her rocking a T-shirt and sweatpants while the other three stars are dressed to the nines.

“This picture has become a meme where it says, ‘Be the Miley of your friend group,’” Miley explained in the clip. “If you guys didn’t know I was bisexual from this damn picture, I don’t know what’s wrong with you. … I mean hello! Look at ‘em.”

‘Midnight Sky’

“I loved having this anthemic, pansexual, bisexual anthem,” Cyrus said of her August 2020 single. “She’s got her hands on her … he’s got his hands on my waist. I felt like it was empowering for me and will be for my fans. … That was me in my authentic form; I feel like I’m thriving.”

Losing It

Cyrus revealed in August 2020 that Hemsworth was the first man she “went all the way” with. She was 16 at the time — and lied about her experience.

“I didn’t go all the way with a dude [until] I was 16 — it wasn’t Nick Jonas — but I ended up marrying the guy. So that’s pretty crazy,” she said. “I made someone up who I knew, then his friend [ended up] marrying him, so I had to say, at 25, that I lied when I was 16. It was a lie I held onto for 10 years, then I was like, no reason to dig old bones up, then it directly affected my life.”

“My identity is related to sex in a much deeper way than my sexuality … I enjoy sexuality more than I enjoy sex,” she told “Call Her Daddy” host Alex Cooper. “I don’t f—k with foreplay because I’m too busy … I don’t like to tease things, I just like to go for it … I could have foreplay longer with a girl than I could with a guy.”

Growing Up

In Elle’s August 2019 issue, Cyrus revealed why she struggled with continuing to star on Hannah Montana after losing her virginity. “The minute I had sex, I was kind of like, I can’t put the f— king wig on again,” she said. “It got weird. I grew up.”

The Rules of Attraction

Cyrus admitted that she never lost interest in women even when she was married to Hemsworth. “I think it’s very confusing to people that I’m married. But my relationship is unique,” she shared in her Elle feature. “And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it. I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women.”

Identifying as Queer While Married

“I think the reason we got married isn’t old-fashioned — I actually think it’s kind of New Age,” she told Vanity Fair for its March 2019 cover story. “We’re redefining, to be f—ing frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship. A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person.”

Also during her Vanity Fair interview, she opened up about how she views her pansexuality. “What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality,” she said at the time. “Relationships and partnerships in a new generation — I don’t think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender. Sex is actually a small part, and gender is a very small, almost irrelevant part of relationships.”

Coming to Terms

In 2016, Cyrus admitted in Variety’s Power of Women L.A. issue that she considers herself to be gender-neutral. “Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my sexuality more,” she previously said. “I was like, 'Oh — that’s why I don’t feel straight and I don’t feel gay. It’s because I’m not.”
