Everything Chrishell Stause Said About Her Justin Hartley Divorce on 'Selling Sunset' Season 3

Letting the cameras in. Chrishell Stause did not hold back during season 3 of Selling Sunset, as the cameras captured her reaction to the news that Justin Hartley had filed for divorce. According to the realtor, 39, the This Is Us actor, 43, completely blindsided her by filing on November 22, 2019, after two years of marriage. The couple began dating in 2014 and tied the knot in 2017. Upon filing, Hartley listed July 8 as their date of separation; in her response, she listed the date he filed as their separation date. The event took place on November 19, two days before he filed. "We were totally fine that day," the actress recalled to her colleague Mary Fitzgerald in the next episode when her costar mentioned that he had donated things for the event. "I mean I thought we were totally fine!" During a confessional interview, she explained that she learned of the divorce "minutes before leaving the house for work," so she just left and got a room at the Four Seasons Hotel with her dog. "I immediately just grabbed a few things and I got out of there as fast as I could," the Young and the Restless alum shared. "I didn’t really know where I was going or what I was going to do, but I just had to leave." Later in the season, Stause left Los Angeles and headed to visit her sister in St. Louis, Missouri, to try to gather her thoughts — and shared more details about their relationship. The Text


During her chat with Fitzgerald, Stause admitted she was still in shock. "I’m trying to keep it together. It’s a lot at once because everyone in the whole world knows at the same time that I knew," she said. "Have you ever been knocked over by a wave and you don’t know what way to swim to get up?"

She then revealed how he told her about his filing: "I found out because he texted me that we were filed. Forty-five minutes later, the world knew."

Not My Life

The All My Children vet explained that Hartley's "go-to" during fights was to say, "I'm out," something she hates. "I always just thought, that’s part of the relationship you just talk through it. … If that’s really what you wanted, there are better ways to go about," she said. "I talked to him right after [he filed] because I thought that must be a joke. That was kind of the end of the communication. What am I supposed to say? What do you say after that? Like now I have to find a place to live, now I have to scramble and figure this out."

The Kentucky native noted that she doesn't even feel like she's living her own life: "It takes a toll on your soul, where you just feel like ... the anger! Like how could you do it this way? And the sadness, like, I love him so much. This was my best friend. Who do I talk to now? It’s such a roller-coaster."

What Happened?

After admitting she's "a hopeless romantic" during a confessional, the Days of Our Lives alum noted that they had a fight the morning they split. "I never saw him since and we didn’t talk things through. Before we had a chance to figure things out, he filed," she shared. "Because of the crazy way in which this went down, people want answers and I f--king want answers."

Looking for 'Greener Grass'


The reality star later detailed her confusion about the situation. "When I think of marriage, I think you work on things with people. They’re not perfect, no one is. You work on it. You talk about it," Stause said in a confessional. "You don’t go out looking for greener grass. Sometimes you have to water the grass that you have, and that’s what marriage is. Sometimes it can be hard, but I mean, I don’t think it should be more hard than easy at all. That’s why I’m so confused because I didn’t feel like that balance was off. I just feel stupid."

In Love

After moving out of her house and into a new place — and being followed by paparazzi — Stause told Amanza Smith that she's still "madly in love" with Hartley. "I want to hide under a rock until this all goes away. ... It makes me so mad because this all could have been avoided if we had done this privately. My mind is blown that he would think that this is the way to conduct himself."

A Meaningful Letter


Stause also shared that she had to reach out to Hartley's 16-year-old daughter, Isabella, who he shares with ex-wife Lindsay Hartley. "I love her so much and I had to write a letter to her," the Eve of Abduction actress said.

Is Fame to Blame?

Smith alluded that Hartley had changed after getting so famous from This Is Us — something the Crimson Mask star didn't exactly deny.

"There can’t be one person fighting for a relationship. You have to have two people and I think a lot has changed in the six years that we were together and then the two years we were married, a lot has changed," Stause said. "I didn’t care about all that stuff. I met him before all of that. ... it’s just annoying because then you get rid of the people that [were there before]. One day that’s gonna go away."

Later in a confessional, she added that "outer elements have reared their ugly head and inserted themselves into our relationship," which upset her. "It’s not normal to meet somebody and then they become wildly famous or they become wildly rich or all these things. I don’t, at the end of the day, think that those things matter."

"I can understand, like, God forbid, your feelings obviously changed for me at some point — I just feel like that’s how you would treat the garbage that you’d throw out," Stause said about the way the divorce went down.

In one moment, the emotional star revealed, "It’s hard not to feel worthless in this moment. It’s hard not to feel like everyone’s laughing at me."

When Did He Decide?


After getting a facial with her sister in St. Louis, Stause broke down in tears and revealed more details, noting that Hartley must have decided to file long before the day he did.

"When I got home that night, everything was fine but we got into an argument and when I look back on it, part of me thinks he had made a decision and I wasn’t given the same," she said before pausing to cry. "Part of me can’t wrap my brain around the fact that he would make such a hasty decision without sitting down and talking to me, but then the other part of me uses that to realize like he had made a decision and he didn’t want to be talked out of it."

She continued: "I just feel like it was just me fighting for something that was a lost cause because he didn’t care enough to sit me down and tell me. I get it, like that’s a lot to change in your life, all that money and fame and all that stuff, but it shouldn’t change how you treat people. ... I would have done anything for him."

Cracking a Joke

After gathering her thoughts in St. Louis, she returned to work and Christine Quinn shared that the guests at her wedding were wearing white. "I could wear my wedding dress. I could be like a dead bride," she joked to the group.

Although she was hesitant, she did attend to the wedding and cried during the ceremony. At the reception, while the group discussed past weddings, someone recalls how beautiful hers was. "It’s pointless if you had gone to it," she replied.

Being Legally Careful


During the reception, she admitted that she needed to tread lightly with speaking about the split with others.

"At this moment there are so many things that I would like to say but none of them are gonna be good right now so I’m just trying to keep my mouth shut because I was married to someone who was a public figure, I have to be very careful with what I say legally," Stause said. "And this is certainly not a safe environment. And also this is someone’s wedding. The last thing I want to do is cause a scene at someone’s wedding."

Writing a New Story

Throughout the season, Stause also may have found some healing. At one point, she admitted that maybe everything does happen for a reason. "I had a plan, and then I met him," she said. "I loved him so much so I changed my plan for him. So it just makes me think that maybe there is a bigger plan for me."

After exiting Quinn's wedding during the finale, she had a glass of wine and ended the season on a high note: "There are two sides to every story, and maybe it’s time that I start writing a new one."
