Celebrities Who Have Had Bar and Bat Mitzvahs: Mason Disick, Drake and More

Mazel Tov! Mason Disick, Drake, Tiffany Haddish, David Arquette and more stars have celebrated the Jewish milestone of being a bar or bat mitzvah. In Judaism, a bar mitzvah is a coming-of-age ritual and celebration, with the term “bar” being used for boys and “bat” traditionally for girls. (The gender-neutral term is "b'nai mitzvah," which can also mean that two people are being celebrated together.) While the ceremony typically takes place at age 13, some stars have celebrated the occasion later in life. Arquette decided to have a bar mitzvah when he was 40 years old while filming a travel show in Israel in June 2012. The Scream star was born Jewish but did not practice the faith at home. “He was very emotional, saying he was happy to be part of the chain of the Jewish people," Shmuel Rabinowitz, the Western Wall rabbi who presided over the ceremony, told the Associated Press at the time. "I'm very pleased to see a man who is returning to his roots." The Never Been Kissed actor, for his part, took to Twitter at the time to share his accomplishment, stating, "I had my bar mitzvah today at the wall. Finally I'm a man.” While Drake — who grew up Jewish — had his ceremony as a teen in 1999, he opted to recreate the event his way in his 2012 "HYFR" music video. "When I had a bar mitzvah back in the day, my mom really didn't have that much money. We kinda just did it in the basement of an Italian restaurant, which I guess is kinda like a faux pas,” the “Passionfruit” rapper recalled in an interview with Digital Spy at the time. “I told myself that if I ever got rich, I'd throw myself a re-bar mitzvah. That's the concept for the video." The Degrassi alum later followed through on the promise he made to himself and threw himself a real celebration with some of his closest friends. For his 31st birthday in August 2017, Drake held the long-awaited star-studded party, Aubrey Graham’s Re-Bar Mitzvah. In attendance for the big bash was Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Lamar Odom, Kelly Rowland, Hailey Baldwin and Drake’s father, Dennis Graham. [jwplayer GJVKmctS-zhNYySv2] Five years after the “Best I Ever Had” rapper’s celebration, it was time for Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick’s son Mason's bar mitzvah. The former couple went all out for their son’s party in December 2022, with the Flip It Like Disick alum sharing a peek of all the delicious snacks available for the teenager’s big bash. “Thanks @RaisingCanes for the delicious food!” the reality star captioned one snap in his Instagram Story, which featured chicken fingers and French fries. He also showed off the stations for Van Leeuwen ice cream and churros from The Churro Man. Also in attendance for Mason’s big day were his aunts Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner, as was his grandma Kris Jenner. “Mazel Tov Mason!!!” Khloé captioned the candid snaps from the party. Mason Disick

Mason celebrated his 13th birthday in December 2022 with his closest friends and family. Scott, for his part, gave fans an inside look to the festivities on his Instagram Stories.

“Thanks @VanLeeuwenIceCream for providing the best ice cream," the Kardashians star wrote via Instagram alongside a snap of the sweet treat in front of the food truck at the party. He also showed off the decor, which included silver balloons and a sign that read “Mason’s Bar Mitzvah December 2022.”

Drake

The “God’s Plan” rapper had his first bar mitzvah in 1999 at an Italian restaurant with his family.

"When I had a bar mitzvah back in the day, my mom really didn't have that much money. We kinda just did it in the basement of an Italian restaurant, which I guess is kinda like a faux pas,” Drake recalled. “I told myself that if I ever got rich, I'd throw myself a re-bar mitzvah.”

Eighteen years later, the Toronto native held a second party dubbing it his “re-bar mitzvah,” with some of the biggest names in Hollywood in attendance.

David Arquette

The Eight Legged Freaks actor did not have the traditional ceremony until later in life. In June 2012, he decided to participate in the ritual while filming a segment for his Travel Channel show in Israel. “I had my bar mitzvah today at the wall. Finally I'm a man," Arquette tweeted at the time.

Tiffany Haddish

The comedian learned she had Jewish ancestry later in life after reconnecting with her father, an Eritrean-born Jew, when she was 27. Prior to her bat mitzvah in December 2019 — which she called her “Black Mitzvah” — Haddish spent months preparing for the religious aspect of the event. The experience took place on her 40th birthday and the actress released a Netflix special, Black Mitzvah, following the ceremony.

“The Black Mitzvah Was EVERYTHING,” Haddish wrote via Instagram at the time. “Last night was one of the best days of my life. I had so much fun. Thank you to everyone that came out to support one of my Dreams. Thank you @netflixisajoke for being a great partner and helping to my dream come true. #SHEREADY.”

Chelsea Handler

In August 2014, the Chelsea Lately alum shared a throwback photo of her bat mitzvah, which took place in the '80s. “Don't every say I'm not a real Jew. My bat-mitzvah. Mazel,” Handler captioned the snap.

James Franco

According to close friend Seth Rogen, the Disaster Artist star always dreamed of having his own bar mitzvah. His wish came true in October 2015 — for a good cause.

"Ever since I’ve known James, he’s been talking about wanting a bar mitzvah. We’re excited to see him finally become a man while also helping us raise awareness and funds for people living with Alzheimer’s and towards research that will lead to a cure," Rogen said in a statement for his charitable organization, Hilarity For Charity.

The star-studded charity event  — which was hosted by the Neighbors star alongside his wife, Lauren Miller — also included performances from Miley Cyrus and Haim while Jeff Goldblum and Zac Efron made appearances.

Nick Kroll

In January 2021, the Don’t Worry Darling actor shared a throwback pic from his childhood bar mitzvah.

“#TBT At my Bar Mitzvah with my family friend Dana who I was in love with at the time,” he wrote via Instagram. “My camp friend Danny in the background - who @sethrogen’s Big Mouth character was loosely based on - not happy I was getting that dance.”

Ben Platt

The Dear Evan Hansen star reflected on his bar mitzvah ceremony while appearing on The Late Late Show With James Corden in October 2019. "I was in a cream suit and purple shirt with matching purple braces,” he said at the time.

When the Broadway star performed at Radio City Music Hall for his Netflix concert special which was filmed in September 2019, Platt compared the experience to the Jewish ritual. “It was a beautiful crossroads of my life —​ like the best bar mitzvah ever," he recalled at the time.

Zoey Deutch

While appearing on The Late Late Show With James Corden in October 2019, the Set It Up actress opened up about her bat mitzvah experience.

“You know, at your bat mitzvah, it’s like a marker of becoming an adult,” Deutch shared. “My 12 year-old-brain thought becoming an adult meant waxing your eyebrows. I thought, ‘Oh, cool, pretty adults and they’ve got their nice eyebrows and I have caterpillar eyebrows.’” 

She added: “God struck me down. I broke out into this spectacular, probably burgundy rash on my whole face. I had very thin eyebrows and a bright red face with a caked on layer of makeup to protect my rashes face. So it was not extravagant. It was kind of sad.”
