If the shoe fits… Emily Blunt spoke out about the Cannes Film Festival's reported sexist practices in a press conference on Tuesday, May 19.
While promoting her new movie Sicario, the Into the Woods actress, 32, was asked about a report that women were required to wear heels to a Cannes gala.
The report in question was from Screen Daily, which wrote on Tuesday that "a handful of women in their fifties were turned away from the screening of Todd Haynes’ competition entry Carol on Sunday night after being told the height of their smart footwear didn’t pass muster. Multiple guests, some older with medical conditions, were denied access to the anticipated world-premiere screening for wearing rhinestone flats."
Reporters at Blunt's Sicario event broached the subject, asking for the star's opinion about the footwear rules. "Yeah, that’s very disappointing," the Devil Wears Prada actress said. "To think there are these waves of equality and waves of people discovering that women are so fascinating and interesting to watch and bankable [on-screen]."
"Everyone should wear flats to be honest," she added. "We shouldn't be wearing high heels anyways. That's my point of view. I just prefer wearing Converse sneakers."
While Screen Daily reports that reps for the festival "confirm that it is obligatory for all women to wear high-heels to red-carpet screenings," Cannes festival director Thierry Frémaux responded to the talk on Twitter on Tuesday, calling the rumors "unfounded."
The official Cannes Film Festival Twitter account retweeted a second message from Frémaux, claiming that the dress code called for formal wear but not specifically heels.
