Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Trailer Brings Back J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Beasts in a briefcase. The very first trailer for the Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, was released by Warner Bros. on Tuesday, December 15, and it stars Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne as leading character Newt Scamander.

The clip opens with Scamander whispering “Lumos Maxima” in the same vein as Harry Potter’s wizarding world. Meanwhile, a woman goes before what appears to be a wizarding judge and expresses concern about humanity’s well-being.

“Yesterday, a wizard entered New York with a case,” the character (Katherine Waterston) says. “A case full of magical creatures. And unfortunately some have escaped.”

These magical creatures are capable of incredible destruction, as evidenced in one scene where an entire wall has been blasted off. According to Rowling, 50 — who makes her screenplay writing debut with Fantastic Beasts — the setting is NYC in 1926. The promotional poster for the flick shows Redmayne, 33, wearing an early-20th-century jacket and holding his briefcase in the center of Grand Central Terminal.

Fantastic Beasts was first written as a supplement to Rowling’s wildly successful Potter series, and was inspired by a textbook used by Hogwarts students.
