Golden Globes 2018 Full Recap: Winners, Memorable Backstage Moments and More

The 75th annual Golden Globe Awards finally arrived and Us Weekly was there for every minute! Seth Meyers hosted the event live from The Beverly Hilton Hotel and admitted to Us earlier in the week that he won’t be shying away from the tough topics, including the current state of Hollywood.

“On my late-night show, we like talking about the things other people are talking about,” Meyers told Us on Thursday, January 4. “We are in a unique situation this year where more than any one movie or any one TV show, there’s this other thing that everybody’s talking about, so we don’t want to ignore it, but we also want to make sure that once we get past it we can turn it over to the people who did great work.”

Here was our play by play of the night:

11:01 p.m. ET Frances McDormand vowed to keep her acceptance speech short when she won Best Actress in a Drama for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, telling all the women they need to have some tequila! “The women here tonight are not here for the food — we are here for the work,” she concluded.

10:44 p.m. ET While Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director, her film, Lady Bird, did win for Best Comedy or Musical! She was overwhelmed with excitement accepting the Golden Globe.

10:27 p.m. ET: The cast of Big Little Lies take the stage after winning for Best Limited Seres or Television Movie. Reese Witherspoon reassures women who don’t have a voice that their stories are being told and that she will continue to tell them. Afterward, she and costar Nicole Kidman embrace in a long, tight hug.

10:25 p.m. ET: Did anyone else notice that Harry Potter reunion when Robert Pattinson and Emma Watson took the stage?

10:18 p.m. ET: Before reading the nominees for Best Director, Presenter Natalie Portman made sure to point out that they were “all male,” making a huge statement with just two words.

10:00 p.m. ET: After winning Best Actor in a Limited Series or Miniseries for his work in FargoEwan McGregor gets asked backstage about a standalone Obi Wan Kenobi movie.“There’s a lot of talk. I’d be happy to play him again but I don’t know anything more about it than you do,” he tells press. “There’s no plans at the moment … the new [Star Wars] is really really beautiful!

9:54 p.m. ET: Following her win for I, TonyaAllison Janney tells Us and other reporters in the press room that Tonya Harding is at the show with the cast. “She loves the movie! I think she’s pretty proud of it. I think she should be. We don’t exonerate her but I think she looks OK in this,” Janney says. “She’s a huge supporter, I should have brought her back her with me!”

9:42 p.m. ET: Norman Reedus and Diane Kruger share a sweet kiss after her filmIn the Fade, won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film!

9:31 p.m. ET: The audience immediately stood for Kirk Douglas, 101, when he took the stage with Catherine Zeta-Jones to present the award for Best Director.

9:18 p.m. ET: When introducing I, Tonya, Janney embodied her character as Tonya Harding‘s mother and wore a bird on her shoulder!

9:08 p.m. ET: James Franco brought up Tommy Wiseau when the star won Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his portrayal of the director and actor in The Disaster Artist. Franco even did an impression of him, but when Wiseau tried to grab the mic, Franco stopped him. Franco went on to laugh and thank the cast, including his brother, who he said he loved very much!

9:00 p.m. ET: Former American Idol judge, Keith Urban, and original American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, presented the award for Best Original Song, actually singing “And the Golden Globe goes to …”

8:42 p.m. ET: Sterling K. Brown won his first Golden Globe for his role in This Is Us. Since he was cut off the last time he won, he quickly thanked his wife and reassured his kids that he’d be taking them to school in the morning. He then thanked the show’s writer, Dan Fogelman for “writing a character who makes it easier for me to be seen and more difficult to be dismissed.”

8:36 p.m. ET: The winner of Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Sam Rockwell, tells the press room that he ran into Jude Law in the bathroom and he was pretty excited about it!

8:27 p.m. ET: Comedy legend Carol Burnett receives a standing ovation when she takes the stage to present with Jennifer Aniston! The Friends actress even asked to pull her ear.

8:13 p.m. ET: Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson present the first award of the night, handing the award for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Miniseries to Nicole Kidman for Big Little Lies. Her costar, Reese Witherspoon, couldn’t have looked happier, watching her with tears in her eyes. She also looked out at her husband, Keith Urban, and told him she loved him so much!

8:04 p.m. ET: Seth Meyers takes the stage and quickly brings up the sexual harassment going on in Hollywood. “Harvey Weinstein isn’t here tonight because I’ve heard rumors that he’s crazy and difficult to work with. But don’t worry, he’ll be back in 20 years when he becomes the first person ever booed during the In Memoriam.”
