Jamie Lynn Spears Gets Emotional in New TLC Documentary: I’m Not Just a Teen Mom or Someone’s Sister

A lot can change in nine years, and Jamie Lynn Spears is living proof. Britney’s little sister is making a long-awaited return to the spotlight in a new TLC documentary titled Jamie Lynn Spears: When the Lights Go Out.

In an emotional sneak peek of the upcoming June 2016 special, Spears, 25, opens up about bouncing back after her career hit a bump in 2007 when she learned she was pregnant at 16 years old with her daughter Maddie, now 7, whom she shares with ex-fiance Casey Aldridge.

“I wanna do something that I’m gonna be proud of,” the Zoey 101 alum declares in the clip above. “I’m not just a child star. I’m not just someone’s sister. And I’m not just a teen mom.”

“I look back now, and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh,’” she tearfully adds, recounting the tumultuous time in her life when she was forced to press pause on her acting and singing pursuits to become a parent.

“Jamie Lynn was, uh, she was bad,” Spears’ father, Jamie, tells the camera, while her mother, Lynne, recalls of her youngest child’s unexpected baby news: “I really thought she was joking.”

“I was a child then,” the “Chillin’ With You” singer concedes in the preview. “I needed to grow up outside of the world’s view.”

Almost a decade later, the young mom seems to have found peace both personally and professionally. The Louisiana native married husband Jamie Watson in March 2014, and released her first full-length country album, The Journey, the following May. Since then, she has penned a handful of songs for other artists, including Jana Kramer’s hit single “I Got the Boy.”
