Jennifer Lopez performed an amazingly emotional tribute to Selena Quintanilla at the 2015 Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami on Thursday, April 30 — reducing half the audience to tears.
The much anticipated tribute was always going to be emotionally charged and nostalgic (Lopez got her big break portraying the Tejano singer in the 1997 biopic of her life, Selena, which told the story of the singer’s tragic murder in 1995). But audience heartstrings were pulled almost as soon as the performance began, as footage of Selena was beamed on stage, while Lopez performed one of her biggest hits, “Como La Flor.”
The 45-year-old singer changed outfits three times during the seven-minute tribute, and at one point looked stunningly similar to the late singer, wearing a pair of sequined, high-waist pants and a sparkling bra top.
And in keeping with the spirit of authenticity, the mom of twins performed on stage with Los Dinos, the family band who originally played with the late Tejano star.
“We love you, Selena,” a visibly emotional Lopez said to the crowd as she brought the performance to a close, while sharing a hug with the singer’s brother and sister, who joined her on stage after her tribute.
