Johnny Depp’s ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ Plummeting 65 Percent From First Film’s Opening Amid Abuse Allegations

Apparently, not many people consider a trip to see the new Alice in Wonderland sequel to be a very important date. The Johnny Depp film Alice Through the Looking Glass, which is struggling mightily in its opening weekend, was released in theaters on Friday, May 27, the same day that the actor’s estranged wife, Amber Heard, accused him of abusing her and obtained a restraining order against him.

The Disney film, which carries a not-insignificant budget of $170 million, is on pace to collect just $40 million during the four-day Memorial Day weekend, according to Rentrak. This is 65 percent behind the impressive $116 million that director Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland collected in its first weekend in March 2010. (The Muppets director James Bobin replaced Burton behind the camera for Looking Glass, with Depp reprising his role as the Mad Hatter. Mia Wasikowska returns as the title character.)

Notably, pre-release tracking for the big-budget family film suggested as of Thursday, May 26, that it would likely collect between $55 million and $60 million, according to Rentrak, meaning the actual sum will be far below even those modest estimations.

The film has earned anemic reviews, currently holding a 29 percent approval rating on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. X-Men: Apocalypse, meanwhile, is expected to win the weekend with a projected $90 million launch.

Depp, 52, is dealing with major turmoil in his personal life. Heard, 30, filed for divorce from the Black Mass actor on Monday, May 23, after just more than a year of marriage. She showed up in court on Friday and appeared to have a bruise on her cheek, and TMZ reports that she provided photographic evidence of his alleged abuse. Depp’s mother, Betty Sue Palmer, died on Friday, May 20.

The three-time Oscar nominee has seen his box-office clout dinged significantly in recent years following a string of underperforming titles, including 2013’s Lone Ranger, 2014’s Transcendence and 2015’s Mortdecai.
