Squeal! It was early 2000 again for a brief, shining moment onstage at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Aug. 25 — when, as expected, Justin Timberlake reunited with ‘N Sync bandmates JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass for a spirited rendition of “Bye, Bye, Bye.” The colossal boy band hasn’t performed together on live TV since 2003’s Grammy Awards.
The reunion was the culmination of Timberlake’s epic solo medley of his post-‘N Sync hits. Winning the Video Vanguard Award for the evening, the 32-year-old sang snippets of “Take Back the Night,” “Sexy Back,” “My Love,” “Cry Me a River,” “Señorita,” “What Goes Around Comes Around” and “Rock Your Body” — rocking stunning dance moves — before his bandmates joined him onstage.
One small surprise? After singing and dancing to several bars of their biggest hit, Chasez, Kirkpatrick, Fatone and Bass then departed the stage as Timberlake continued his set, with superstars like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Will Smith and family and others on their feet.
Finally accepting his award from Jimmy Fallon, Jessica Biel’s hubby was quick to acknowledge his former bandmates. “Most of all, I owe [this award” to those four guys up there,” he said. “Above all else, I’m gonna share it — I’m gonna keep it at my house though.”
