Enough with the controversies already! Lauren Graham wants Gilmore Girls fans to know that there’s nothing fake about her coffee in the original WB series or its Netflix revival.
Some critics have jokingly claimed that the actress’ cup is actually empty in the series. Case in point: Her character, Lorelai Gilmore, held the hot beverage from the bottom in the show’s first episode, “Winter.”
“I want to tell you one thing, that is a true thing. There is always coffee in my cup. Always,” Graham, 49, told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show Thursday, December 1. “That is a pet peeve of mine. I’m holding it.”
She added: “I love the controversies that are cropping up!”
Lorelai and her daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel), are known for begging diner owner Luke Danes (Scott Patterson) for coffee. Fun fact: During the original series, Bledel, 35, used to have soda in her mug instead.
Graham has been discussing the reboot — and Lorelai’s happily ever after — all week. In Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, the Dragonfly Inn owner finally tied the knot with Luke.
“I had some of my favorite moments … as an actor and person during that experience,” Graham told TVLine, noting that she has yet to watch the four 90-minute episodes herself. “I just want to leave it there for now.”
Fans hope that more GG is on the way, but Graham doesn’t think that there are many more stories to tell — at least, for Lorelai.
“I can see more for Kelly [Bishop] and Alexis [Bledel] — I can see where that story would go for their characters,” she told TVLine. “I can’t see what would be next for [Lorelai], but I imagine [series co-creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] can.”
