Take that, Television Academy! Empire creator Lee Daniels isn’t too pleased with his Fox hit’s lack of nomination in the Outstanding Drama Series category of the 67th Emmy Awards on Thursday, July 16 — just hear what he has to say in an Instagram video he shot with Empire star Jussie Smollett.
The executive producer and his protege filmed a giggly video from the Empire set following what was presumably a discussion between the two men where Smolett, 32, informed his boss that he should try not to get too controversial in his response to the morning’s Emmy nominations.
“Jussie is saying I have to be politically correct on Instagram or I’m going to get in trouble,” Daniels, 55, says, all smiles.
Responds Smollett, “You have to be nice!”
But Daniels doesn’t take his advice, offering a joking — but harsh! — message for Emmy voters: “F— those motherf—ers!”
Although Empire was shut out of a series nod — and none of its original music was recognized — star Taraji P. Henson was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as jailbird-turned-music honcho Cookie Lyon in the breakout hit.
The Primetime Emmy Awards air on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. Season 2 of Empire premieres Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 9 p.m. ET on the network.
