If you loathe your spouse, does the honeymoon still count? On the Tuesday, August 30, episode of Married at First Sight, the newlyweds’ honeymoons came to an end, and they headed back to start their real lives together in Miami — but for one couple, it looked like it might have ended before it began.
“The honeymoon is over. It has been over, but now it’s technically over,” Derek Schwartz lamented to the camera. “Last night at dinner, I tried so hard to talk to her and open up, but she just got really drunk.” Looking pretty beat-down, Derek added, “I did this with an open mind, and with all the possibilities, I never imagined that I would be with somebody who would want to walk away from this after two or three days.”
His wife, Heather Seidel, wasn’t any more upbeat, declaring that after only a few days together, she knew this wasn’t the type of marriage she wanted to have. “I can’t be optimistic about the future,” Derek sighed as they headed for the airport.
Tom Gives His Sex Life Two Enthusiastic Thumbs Up
On the other end of the spectrum were Lillian Vilchez and Tom Wilson, who were downright giddy about their new union and had, at this point, consummated their marriage … many, many times. Tom reported that their sex life was “good” and punctuated his review with two very enthusiastic thumbs up.
He added that he loved Lillian’s “bubbly personality” and “sexy swagger” — but no, he hadn’t told the luxury car–driving Lily just yet that he lived in a bus.
Nick Didn’t Have Sex With Sonia, but He Did Show Her His Apartment
Nick Pendergrast and Sonia Granados continued to keep things friendly and … friendly. Nick reported that he did want to have sex with Sonia, but he wanted it to be meaningful, and apparently he wasn’t ready for that yet. Sonia, naturally, continued to fret about whether her husband found her attractive at all.
But while they weren’t rocking it between the sheets, at least they weren’t being cagey about their respective homes. Sonia’s main takeaways from visiting Nick’s place were: First, she was still definitely afraid of dogs, and second, that Nick was good with his hands (having made a lot of his own furniture) — Sonia found Nick’s ability to use saws and hammers to be a good thing because it counterbalanced his other “metrosexual” tendencies.
Nick then visited Sonia’s place. She was nervous because her apartment was more modest than his, but Nick seemed to like it — except for the fact that it didn’t have space for his dogs. Though they got along well enough, Sonia did comment in her video reflection that she wished Nick would give her as much attention as he gives his dogs. At this point, that seemed unlikely.
They had a quick chat about money (summary: Nick made more than Sonia did) and ended up going house-hunting together and settling on a place that had everything they wanted, plus a hot tub, but was over their budget. They kissed and hugged to celebrate, but Sonia was still anxious for them to connect on a deeper level.
Derek and Heather Have an Intervention
Upon returning from their honeymoon (though we use that term loosely), Derek and Heather met with Pastor Calvin Roberson for an emergency session — but was it too little, too late? Derek said he didn’t think Heather liked him very much, and based on her reaction, that was accurate. Heather said she was “extremely unhappy” about the whole situation, arguing that Derek picked fights unnecessarily, like when he accused her about flirting with the surf instructor.
“You should leave!” Derek shouted. The pastor then asked Heather if she wanted to leave. “I don’t know how to answer that right now,” she sighed. “I’ve reached my limit.” Derek blasted back that she’d reached her limit on the second day, which, to be fair, also seemed accurate.
When the pastor asked Heather if she wanted to be married to Derek, she reasoned that this wasn’t a good time to have this conversation because she was “mad” and “exhausted.” She also added that she felt like she was “not with a grown man,” based on the way he was fighting with her, and that in every possible area, she was “super turned off” and needed a break. If you read between the lines, that didn’t sound like she wanted to be married to him very much.
Derek tried to put an optimistic spin on the situation. “I don’t claim to be perfect,” he said. “I’m not here to stay the person that I am. That’s what a big part of this process is, for us to grow together.” Heather decided to take a few days to herself to decide if she wanted to continue with this.
Get on the Bus
Meanwhile, back in la-la land (aka Tom and Lillian’s world of love), Tom visited Lillian’s place and was relieved that she didn’t have as many fancy things as he’d feared. Then it was his turn to show her where he lived.
“I live on a tour bus!” he cheered as they drove up to his … umm … house.
“Oh, my God — really?” Lillian asked the camera. “What the f–k! The worst fears that I had expressed to the experts might be happening right now.” But then she composed herself and said that she’d reminded herself to keep an open mind. “Now I can understand why he was being so cryptic,” she added.
As she got the grand tour, Lillian seemed genuinely impressed with Tom’s innovative approach to making clever use of a small space. Tom said he would love to have Lillian live with him in the bus, and she said it was beautiful — but there was not enough space for her clothes and shoes. So just to be clear, she would not be living on the bus.
They then discussed finances, and even though it sounded like Lillian had actually made more than him the previous year, Tom asked her if she would be willing to sign a post-nuptial agreement. (You know, so she didn’t steal his bus out from under him.) To the camera, Lillian admitted that she preferred “trusting each other and creating an emotional bond” to legal documents dividing their assets up before they really got started on their marriage, but to Tom, she said it was fine.
Tom then admitted he knew they couldn’t really live on the bus (one win for Lillian!). As they crawled into bed, she asked Tom to wash the dirt off his feet. He complied, but called her a germophobe because she didn’t like “dirty feet in the bed.”
