‘Married at First Sight’ Reunion Recap: Did Anyone Stay Together — Including Nick and Sonia?

Love takes time…or does it? On the Tuesday, November 1, episode of Married at First Sight, the experts caught up with the season’s three couples to see how everyone was faring since the cameras had shut off. While it probably came as no surprise that Derek Schwartz and Heather Seidel had not rekindled their romance, the fates of the other two newlyweds may have come as a bit of a shock. Also, just because they had called it quits only two weeks in hardly meant Derek and Heather were off the hook!

Derek and Heather Take the Hot Seat

Appearing cool and collected, Derek said he really felt he tried his hardest during the experiment and did everything he could to try to save his marriage. Looking back on those fateful two weeks, he said he honestly didn’t have any regrets.

“It would be great for me to be sitting here with a happy wife,” Derek admitted. He added that since the experiment, marriage had become “much more of a reality” for him but that he wasn’t “in a rush to jump into anything right off the bat.” Asked if he would be open to talking with Heather, he said yes.

For Heather, however, it was a different story. She appeared to be on the brink of tears from almost the moment she sat down — and she did eventually begin to cry. “I didn’t expect to have the hurt and the sadness,” she reported, adding that she has always wanted to get married, and this was a big loss for her. She also insisted she’d learned to let people in “even when it’s hard” and was more determined than ever to be the “best version” of herself. That all sounded nice, but when asked if she would be open to seeing Derek, she said no without so much as a pause — and while she said she did “want to find a good man” to share her life with, she also said she was not currently dating at all.

Tom Wasn’t Prepared for “Being Locked Down”

Though Tom Wilson and Lillian Vilchez decided to stay married at the end of the six-week experiment, their fate since had been less certain. Tom reported that marriage was “a lot different” since the cameras went off and that he wasn’t prepared for “being locked down” in this way. (Not sure what he thought marriage was all about, but at least he was being honest.)

Lillian also admitted it was “hard,” explaining she had learned, “Marriage is not easy. It’s not just about you…and both people have to have that mentality.” So, did Tom have that mentality?

Apparently he did! They reported happily that they had gotten a new place together that was not Tom’s beloved bus. Tom admitted that they “complement each other” and they could see how much they had in common despite their distinct lifestyle differences (lifestyle differences = Tom wants to live in a bus and Lillian does not).

Lillian and Tom

As they chatted with Dr. Pepper Schwartz, Rachel DeAlto and Calvin Roberson, Tom and Lillian held hands and were very affectionate. They both giggled as they said their sex life was both “very healthy” and “very enjoyable.” More newsworthy than that, however, was Tom’s report that when they got their new place, Lillian had given away 16 pairs of shoes and three bags of clothes.

Tom added that Lillian was “too hard” on herself, and he was working to break that shell by encouraging her to do things like go to dinner without makeup on. Sounds like a good marriage to Us!

Tom Surprises Lillian

Later on, during a romantic walk on the beach, Tom showed Lillian just how committed he was to the marriage by getting down on one knee and giving her the engagement ring she hadn’t gotten at the outset. “This is a promise to you that I’m going to be the best husband that I can be,” he said as he slid the ring onto her finger. “This is a show of commitment and that I am trying my hardest.”

Lillian called their marriage “a dream come true,” explaining that it was just a “different type of fairy tale.”

Nick and Sonia

Did Nick and Sonia Stay Together?

Perhaps no couple had everyone guessing more than Nick Pendergrast and Sonia Granados, who got off to a strong start only to implode halfway through. While they recovered enough to decide to stay married at the end of six weeks, it was anyone’s guess whether that decision had stuck.

When Nick sat down on the sofa, the first thing Dr. Pepper noticed was that he was not wearing a wedding ring. Nick said that sometimes he wondered “what the heck” he did marrying a stranger but then revealed he and Sonia were still together and he had simply taken his ring off to go golfing and forgotten to put it back on.

Sonia insisted that she saw a future with Nick regardless of the things that had happened, and throughout their time being grilled by the experts, she and Nick held hands. The experts all swooned over how cute Nick and Sonia were together and commended them for making it work despite the fact that their “love languages” were very different.

Later, Nick and Sonia snuggled up next to each other. Nick said he loved that she brought out a different side of his personality, and she dreamily commented about what a “great father” he would be.
