MTV Classic Brings Back ‘Daria,’ ‘Laguna Beach,’ More ’90s Shows

Prepare yourself for the best news you’ve heard all day: MTV is rebranding VH1 Classic as MTV Classic, complete with all your favorite ’90s and ’00s shows. That means Daria, Beavis & Butt-head, Laguna Beach and more will live in one place for your easy viewing pleasure.

Just as glorious, there’s hardly any wait. MTV Classic is set to launch on Monday, August 1, less than a week away — and 35 years to the day after MTV debuted in 1981.

Kicking off at 6 a.m. ET, the first hour of the network’s existence will replicate the first hour of programming in MTV’s history (i.e., after a spaceship took flight, a series of VJs took the stage to discuss the idea behind a network devoted to music). But just in case you can’t MTV and chill next Monday, “MTV Hour One” will be streamed via Facebook as a Facebook Live video.

As of now, MTV Classic will air the best of Total Request Live and MTV Unplugged during the day, while popular animated shows, including Beavis & Butt-head and Aeon Flux, will play during prime time. The weekend, however, will be devoted to marathons of Laguna Beach and The Real World.

“From Beavis & Butt-head to Laguna Beach, MTV’s programming vault is a music and pop-culture gold mine with universal resonance,” Sean Atkins, president of MTV, noted in a statement. “MTV Classic gives audiences a modern and artful home for classic MTV programming and — alongside MTV, MTV2, MTV Live and mtvU — rounds out a diverse portfolio with music and youth culture at its core.”
