Milla Jovovich kicked butt at the box office!
Resident Evil: Retribution — the fifth installment of the zombie film franchise — debuted in first place with $21.1 million in its opening weekend.
Despite taking the top spot, the Paul W. S. Anderson-directed flick only raked in $8.4 million from 3,012 locations September 14 — the lowest opening day for the Resident Evil franchise since the original movie was released in 2002.
The 3D version of Finding Nemo placed second with $17.5 million, while Kyra Sedgwick's The Possession fell from first place to third place with $5.8 million.
The Prohibition-era gangster film Lawless, starring Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain and Tom Hardy, earned $4.2 million for a fourth place finish. ParaNorman, featuring the voices of Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck, Leslie Mann and John Goodman — came in fifth place with $3 million.
Rounding out the top 10 were The Expendables 2 (No. 6, $3 million), The Words (No. 7, $2.9 million), The Bourne Legacy (No. 8, $2.9 million), The Odd Life of Timothy Green (No. 9, $2.5 million) and The Campaign ($2.4 million).
