This is the f–kin' American dream: a second Spring Breakers movie is on its way.

News broke this week that a sequel is in the works to 2013's controversy-courting dramedy starring James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine. The Harmony Korine-directed movie told the story of four young women who have a wild spring break, which takes a turn for the dramatic after a cocaine binge, robbery, and ensuing arrest.

As first reported by Screen Daily, production company Wild Bunch announced plans to complete Spring Breakers 2 in time for the Cannes Film Festival.

Called Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, the upcoming installment is not expected to feature any of the stars from the first film. The sequel will be directed by video helmer Jonas Akerlund (Spun) and written by Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting).

"It’s not a direct sequel, although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original," Wild Bunch's Vincent Maraval told Screen Daily.

The new film will reportedly focus on a new group of partiers, who run into trouble when a group of evangelical Christians try to convince them to convert.

With a production budget of just $5 million, Spring Breakers opened in limited released in March 2013, earning $14.1 million at the domestic box office and $17.6 million abroad. The indie became a cult classic and took home awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the San Francisco Film Critics, and the Venice International Film Festival.
