The Bachelorette’s Chase McNary Regrets Getting Angry at JoJo Fletcher: I Was in So Much ‘Shock and Despair’

As soon as he bravely declared his love for Fletcher (something he’s never said to a woman before), she told him she didn’t feel the same and didn’t think that spending the night together would change anything.

“I jumped over a hurdle I’ve never done before, and now I’m skewered. Now I’m shattered. I mean, what do you want me to say? You’ve 100 percent made me regret saying that. So now love equals ‘Get the f–k out’?” he told Fletcher before he cracked open a beer and left in anger.

The 27-year-old later explained to ABC News that he lost his temper because he was so shocked by the turn of events. “I think it’s any man’s reaction that as soon as something like that happens, you’re just like, ‘I’m gonna have a beer and make the best of the situation,’” McNary shared. “I think at that moment I was ultimately just in so much shock and despair and confusion. Because the whole day prior to that and the whole hometown prior to that went so well, why would it go so wrong? So for it to be on such a high note to end on such a hard note, I was in shock and I reacted in a way I wish I wouldn’t have.”

Soon after his tantrum, the medical sales rep realized the error of his ways and heard from producers that Fletcher, 25, was hurt by his words. “I definitely woke up the next morning just not feeling right,” McNary said. “[The producers and I] had a long conversation about it, and I just knew some more closure needed to be had and I didn’t want to wait until the ‘Men Tell All’ [taping] for that to finish.”

The Colorado resident decided he wanted to return to clear the air with Fletcher before the next rose ceremony. “I’m grateful they let me do that,” he told ABC News. “That last conversation was important to me so that JoJo knew I wasn’t mad at her — so she knew I was impressed by her and proud of her.”

During the conversation, he made it clear he wasn’t asking for a second chance with the Bachelorette. “I’m a calm guy. I’m an understanding guy. I know the situation,” he told the website. “I just didn’t want her to have that on her shoulders going into one of the biggest decisions of her life.”

Now Fletcher is left to choose between Robby Hayes and Jordan Rodgers, who have both declared their love. Each of the finalists will meet Fletcher’s family and spend a last one-on-one with their potential future wife before she decides who gets her final rose.

The Bachelorette’s “Men Tell All” special airs on ABC Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
