‘The Good Wife’ Series Finale: Will Josh Charles Return?

Is Will Gardner making a comeback … from the grave? TVLine reports that Josh Charles will reprise his role on The Good Wife series finale in a possible flashback sequence — and now the series’ showrunners are weighing in.

“We don’t want to squash those rumors, because why would we?” Robert King said during the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC on Sunday, April 17. “But there are a lot of possibilities for the last episodes.”

As previously reported, Charles’ beloved character was killed off in episode 15 of season 5 back in 2014. Charles, 44, originally asked to leave the series in season 4 but was convinced to stay on so Will’s sendoff could be handled properly.

“It’s been one of the greatest gigs for me in my entire career, but at the end of last year, my contract was up and I was ready to move on,” Charles explained to David Letterman in March 2014. “It is tough to leave stability and structure, but it was great for the show and also a really proper goodbye to the character. We’ve been able to keep it a secret for an entire year!”

Fans of the CBS drama were just as heartbroken as protagonist Julianna Margulies (Alicia Florrick) when Charles said goodbye. However, the Emmy winner promises a powerful series finale. (It was announced in February that the remaining episodes in season 7 would conclude the show.)

“I read it once, and I couldn’t talk to anyone about it, because I was emotionally confused, because I was having so many emotions knowing I was wrapping this character up,” Margulies, 49, said at the festival on Sunday.

“So I opened the wine. And I poured a wee glass, not an Alicia-sized glass,” the ER alum continued. “I then read it a fourth time, and I then could digest it. I wrote [the Kings] three words: ‘Nothing but brilliant.'”

And that brilliance may continue. Robert and Michelle King haven’t ruled out a spinoff that concentrates on a not-yet-revealed supporting character. “It’s very preliminary,” Michelle said at the panel. “And a little bit early to be talking about it … But there is a possibility.”

The Good Wife series finale airs on CBS on Sunday, May 8.
