‘The Walking Dead’ Recap: Did We Just See the Biggest Death in the History of Zombie TV?!

In the final moments of The Walking Dead‘s Sunday, March 27, episode, you might have heard an unusual sound coming not from your TV, but the universe at large: The anguished screams of a million fans who might actually quit the AMC series for good if a certain thing actually happened.

Season 6’s penultimate episode left the fates of multiple characters hanging in the balance, including a fan favorite who may or may not be DOA when the show returns next Sunday. Here’s what happened, and what’s at stake, as we head into the finale.

Carol Makes Her Getaway

Last week, Carol (Melissa McBride) abandoned Alexandria by night, leaving behind a Dear John letter explaining that she couldn’t kill anymore. This week, it turned out that she wasn’t being entirely honest about that, when a group of Saviors shot out the wheels of her getaway car and ended up with a face full of hot lead for their troubles. (The biggest mystery about the Saviors at this point is where they’re getting this seemingly endless supply of menacing but totally ineffective men; this bunch took several shots at Carol, and didn’t hit her once.)

Rick and Morgan Search and Bicker

One of several loose ends to be tied up next week: Carol accidentally left one of her assailants alive, which is going to spell trouble for Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Morgan (Lennie James). After tracking Carol’s car to the scene of the shootout, the two men set out across a field, following a trail of blood that turned out to belong to a random walker.

However, it wasn’t entirely a lost cause: The search gave Morgan and Rick yet another opportunity to butt heads over whether or not it’s cool to murder folks, with Morgan finally revealing that he’d kept one of the Wolves alive after their raid on Alexandria.

“People come back, Rick,” Morgan said. (We’ll give the guy this much: He’s consistent!) And ultimately, Rick left Morgan to continue the search for Carol alone … but not before revealing a secret of his own.

The protein bar thief from way back when? Yeah, that was totally Michonne (Danai Gurira).

Maggie Gets Into a Pickle

Back in Alexandria, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) was getting some much-needed R&R with some help from Enid (Katelyn Nacon), who took over Maggie’s watch and left her with instructions to “put up your feet and eat some pickles.” And clearly, Maggie is taking impending motherhood seriously: Not only did she chow down on pickles like a proper pregnant lady, but she got Enid to give her the quintessential Mom Haircut, too.

As she gazed at her freshly shorn style in a mirror, Maggie suddenly grimaced, and screamed. Not because the haircut was bad (although it’s … uh, not great), but in agonizing pain. She fell to the ground, clutching her abdomen — and for now, that’s all we know. Fingers crossed that it’s just indigestion from the pickles, and not something more serious.

Daryl Goes Looking for a Fight and/or a Dwight

Meanwhile, Daryl (Norman Reedus) was still reeling from the horror of Denise’s death, which could have totally been prevented if he’d just killed Dwight (Austin Amelio) when he had the chance. Determined to do what he should have before, he set out in search of Dwight and the Saviors, with Rosita (Christian Serratos), Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Michonne on his heels.

The bad news: Glenn and Michonne couldn’t convince Daryl and Rosita to abandon the fight, causing the four to split up.

The worse news: While Daryl and Rosita continued the search, the Saviors found, surrounded and captured Glenn and Michonne.

And the worstest, most ghastly news of all: With only moments left in the episode, Daryl and Rosita found their friends bound and gagged in a clearing — only to be caught by surprise by Dwight, who emerged from the bushes behind them with gun drawn.

“Hi, Daryl,” said Dwight.

Daryl began to turn.

And as he did, a shot rang out. And not gonna lie, it certainly looked like Daryl’s blood and brains got splattered all over the camera in the moment before the scene cut to black. The last sound, apart from the gunshot, was a man’s voice:

“You’ll be alright,” it said.

Needless to say, if Daryl Dixon just died, we beg to differ. We will not be alright. We will never be alright. But after the fake-out surrounding Glenn’s death earlier this season, fans of The Walking Dead will likely wait to see a body before they start rioting in the streets … probably.
