Indie flicks, special TV screenings and star-studded parties! Yes, NYC’s 15th annual Tribeca Film Festival offers Us everything we could hope for — and more! Here are six reasons why we’re excited:
Anna Reigns Supreme
Opening night kicks off in high fashion Wednesday, April 13 with the world premiere of The First Monday In May. The documentary offers up an all-access behind-the-scenes look into the 2015 Met Gala, China: Through the Looking Glass. Iconic Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour is in prime The Devil Wears Prada mode as she meticulously plans the A-plus-list bash — described as the “Super Bowl” of fashion. Organizing a seating chart has never been this scintillating.
Katie Goes Behind the Lens
She can add another skill to her LinkedIn profile! Katie Holmes, 37, makes her directorial debut with All We Had, which premieres Friday, April 15. Adapted from Annie Weatherwax’s 2014 novel, the drama focuses on a single mom, played by Holmes, who struggles to provide for her teen daughter (played by newcomer Stefania Owen).
The Good Wife Says Goodbye
Before the acclaimed CBS legal drama signs off in May, cast members Julianna Margulies, Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo will join the show’s creators, Robert and Michelle King, for a retrospective conversation Sunday, April 17. Plus, audiences will get a preview of the series finale!
Snapchat Shorts Premieres
Snapchat this: The social media platform and TFF teamed up to find the best Snapchat Stories from across the nation. The most creative and imaginative stories will be announced at a bash hosted by Samsung 837 on Sunday, April 17. (And you can watch the winners on Snapchat later in the week.)
Tom Hanks and John Oliver Talk It Out
The two-time Oscar winner will sit down with the Last Week Tonight host Friday, April 22 to discuss Hanks’ new indie flick, A Hologram for the King. Based on Dave Eggers’ novel, the film features Hanks as a struggling business man who travels to Saudi Arabia to close a deal with a wealthy monarch. Other Tribeca Talks and Tune Ins include J.J. Abrams in conversation with Chris Rock (April 15); a screening of cult hit Broad City with creators and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson (April 17); and a preview screening of Oprah Winfrey’s new OWN series Greenleaf (April 20). Yes, Oprah will be in the house!
Taxi Driver Rides Again
You talkin’ to me? In honor of its 40th anniversary, Martin Scorsese’s 1976 thriller Taxi Driver will be screened at the Beacon Theater on Thursday, April 21. Following the movie, Scorsese, stars Robert De Niro — who co-founded the film festival — Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, and writer Paul Schrader will take part in conversation moderated by writer Kent Jones.
