7 Easter Eggs From Taylor Swift’s ‘Me!’ Music Video

We checked it once, and we checked it twice … and Taylor Swift’s new music video for “Me!,” the first single from her upcoming seventh studio album, is full of Easter eggs for eagle-eyed fans. The video, which Swift released at midnight on Friday, April 26, depicts the 29-year-old falling out and reconciling with a leading man played by Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie, her collaborator on the new single. “I promise that you’ll never find another like me,” the Grammy winner sings in the chorus. “I’m the only one of me / Baby, that’s the fun of me / You’re the only one of you / Baby, that’s the fun of you.” https://youtu.be/FuXNumBwDOM Swift has been teasing the single release for weeks, posting a countdown clock to this Friday on her website and on Instagram earlier this month. She announced the name of the single — and revealed Urie’s involvement — in an interview with Robin Roberts during ABC’s broadcast of the NFL draft on Tuesday, April 25. Earlier in the day, Swift gave fans the biggest clue yet: A huge mural of butterfly wings with the word “Me!” in the middle, painted on a wall in Nashville by street artist Kelsey Montague. “So... @kelseymontagueart helped me pull off the best surprise clue reveal today in Nashville!!” Swift wrote on Instagram that day. “Thank you to everyone who showed up, I’ve never been more proud of your FBI level detective skills.” In retrospect, the Pennsylvania alum has been offering glimpses of her “Me!” music video for days. Unbeknownst to fans at the time, many of her uploads in the last two weeks have shown props and wardrobe from the video. And the video itself is full of references to Swift’s past and hints about her future — including details about her upcoming album, the title and release date of which has not been announced. Snake Turned Butterfly

Swift is excluding herself from her snake narrative, so to speak. At the start of the video, a snake — the symbol of her Reputation era — explodes into butterflies. Plus, the rainbow-hued world of this music video appears to be contained within a giant chrysalis.

Only One of Her

Another departure from Swift’s Reputation era? She’s singing that there’s only “one” of her, after presenting many different personas in her 2017 “Look What You Made Me Do” music video. In that vid, she said, “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, because she’s dead.” In this one, however, she sings, “I know that I went psycho on the phone.”

Dixie Chicks

In one shot of Urie, 32, he stands before a framed photo of the Dixie Chicks — as Swift sings that “there’s a lot of cool chicks out there” — a sign that Swift may team up with the country girl group on her upcoming album.

Lover

The word “Lover” is lit up in neon midway through the music video, hinting that that’s the title of another track from Swift’s new album.

Engagement?

Urie presenting a diamond ring in this video suggests Swift is either trolling all the speculation that she’s engaged to boyfriend Joe Alwyn or she’s actually engaged. (Note that the city in the music video hosts both Capitol Hill, a landmark of Swift’s native United States, and Big Ben, a landmark of Alwyn’s native United Kingdom.)

New Cat?

In a YouTube Q&A, Swift told fans, “There’s a secret in the video that I’ve been keeping in for months.” That secret might be that she has adopted a third cat: The feline Urie holds in this music video is not Meredith Grey or Olivia Benson, both of whom make cameos in the beginning of the vid.

Seventh Album

The singer has been showing emphasizing the number seven on Instagram for weeks, and at one point in this music video, she is surrounded by seven women holding seven briefcases, a nod to her upcoming album being her seventh.
