It’s almost that time of year again! The annual Arrowverse crossover, which airs across multiple nights and features characters from Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and, in the past, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, will return to TV screens later this year. The network announced on September 26 that the title of the crossover will be “Elseworlds.” The only other clue provided was, “Chaos is coming.” Past themes include 2017’s “Crisis on Earth-X,” which saw the heroes battling their evil doppelgangers, and 2016’s “Invasion!” which brought a slew of malicious aliens to the planet.
Sadly, the DC’s Legends of Tomorrow cast will not participate in this year’s crossover, despite their inclusion in the past two years’ events. Star Caity Lotz, who plays Sara Lance, explained the decision to exclude the band of misfits at San Diego Comic-Con. “The Legends have really set themselves apart from the rest of the Arrowverse,” the actress told TVLine in July. “We’re very different [and] we’re not the same kind of show as the other ones, so we don’t [fit in as well.]” She added: “Logistically, it’s crazy. When you have too many characters, you don’t have the ability to do good character work.”
Ruby Rose’s casting as Kate Kane, a.k.a. Batwoman, was announced on August 7. Rose will make her debut as the “out lesbian and highly trained street fighter” in the crossover, with the potential to star in her own series slated for 2019. Fans got their first look at the character, who will lend a helping hand to the mainstay heroes, when a promotional shot of the Orange Is the New Black actress — outfitted in a red wig and a black suit emblazoned with a red bat symbol — was released on October 9.
Many actresses have embodied Lois Lane over the years, from Teri Hatcher to Amy Adams. Now, Elizabeth Tulloch will take on the role for the first time in the Arrowverse. Supergirl executive producers Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner described her Lois as a “dogged, determined and brave reporter [who] will make for a strong partner to Superman.”
Speaking of The Man of Steel … Tyler Hoechlin, who has appeared on Supergirl, will return as Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman. Other guest stars include Cassandra Jean Amell (the real-life wife of Arrow star Stephen Amell) as Mr. Freeze’s wife Nora Fries, Jeremy Davies as potential Big Bad John Deegan, LaMonica Garrett as Mar Novu/The Monitor, an observer of the multiverse, and Bob Frazer as Arkham Asylum inmate Roger Hayden.
Stephen teased a “secret” guest star when he posted a behind-the-scenes video on Twitter October 11. In the clip, a mysterious chair sits alongside the seats of Emily Bett Rickards, David Ramsey, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin.
The Green Arrow portrayer has hinted heavily at a new costume for Oliver Queen. “Officially started work on the crossover today,” Stephen captioned a photo on September 14 of his face covered in green slime that pointed to a fresh mask. The actor also tweeted that he “never could’ve imagined” his crossover outfit and that he’s “had more fittings for the crossover than [he] had for the pilot.” He further noted: “Sometimes you can change a superhero suit with addition by subtraction.”
While some sectors of the Arrowverse are lighter than others (looking at you, The Flash!), the crossover seems to be adopting a brighter tone, with Stephen tweeting on October 11: “Today on the crossover the director asked me if I could laugh less hysterically.”
Stephen told his followers on October 9 that “it was weird being the only actor filming on Flash for a couple of hours today…”
The 2018 crossover appears to be a big deal for Ramsey’s John Diggle after his character was mostly sidelined in last year’s outing. “I can’t get over what a cool day today was,” Stephen tweeted on October 12. “Particularly excited for @david_ramsey.” The Spartan portrayer later added: “There’s a slight element of similarity with all annual crossovers..after all, it’s the same shows. But I can say with certainty, what happens in this crossover has never and will never be seen again. EVER.”
Gustin and Amell wore matching black leather jackets, black bandanas, white T-shirts, black pants and black studded boots in a behind-the-scenes pic shared by the Arrow star on Instagram October 15. He captioned the shot: “Barry and Oliver have really gone next level friendship wise.”
Benoist gave fans their first look at Tulloch as Lois in an October 17 Instagram photo, in which Clark Kent and his lady love pose with Kara on a farm. “Two kryptonians and a journalist walk into a crossover,” the actress wrote. Later that day, Amell posted a pic at the same location.
Fans geeked out when photos surfaced of Shipp in what appeared to be his original suit from the ‘90s iteration of The Flash, in which he starred as Barry Allen. (Turns out, the costume was an on-the-nose recreation.) After first playing Gustin’s father on the CW series, the Dawson’s Creek alum currently portrays Jay Garrick, Earth 3’s version of the speedster.
Amell posted an Instagram photo of himself and former Arrow costar Colin Donnell on November 1. The Chicago Med star has appeared on the CW series several times since his character’s death in season 1, most recently at the end of season 6. However, it’s possible he was just visiting his friend on set since the crossover filmed partly in Chicago, where his NBC series is also shot.
In the official trailer for “Elseworlds,” released on November 25, Oliver tells Barry, “Everyone on Earth thinks we’re each other.” Iris (Candice Patton) calls Oliver “Barry Allen” after locking lips with him. The Green Arrow-turned-Flash later points out, “He’s rewriting reality again,” hinting that Davies’ character is to blame.
The synopsis for part one (a.k.a. the Flash episode) reads: “When Barry Allen and Oliver Queen wake up one morning and realize they have swapped bodies with each other, the two set off to find out what disturbed the timeline to cause such a shift. However, things quickly go from bad to worse when they present their case to Team Flash and the gang doesn’t believe them. Barry and Oliver realize they need Supergirl’s help and travel to Smallville on Earth-38 where they end up meeting Kara’s cousin, Clark Kent, and intrepid reporter, Lois Lane.”
“With Oliver and Barry still stuck in the other’s bodies, the two get a lead on John Deegan and head to Gotham City with Supergirl to figure out why their reality has changed,” the part two — which takes place during Arrow — description continues. “While there, they meet the mysterious Kate Kane who provides them with information that leads the group to Arkham Asylum.”
Part three, the Supergirl hour, concludes: “Supergirl, The Flash, Green Arrow and Superman engage in the battle of their lives.”
