'Atlanta' Season 3: Everything to Know About Donald Glover’s Next Adventure on the FX Series

The Georgia crew is going international! Following a three-year hiatus, Atlanta is returning to FX for its third season in March 2022. The hit series was renewed for season 3 in June 2018, but filming was pushed back amid the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of its intended January 2021 premiere date, fans had to wait another year before seeing what Donald Glover’s Earnest “Earn” Marks and his cousin, Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles (Brian Tyree Henry), would get themselves into as they continued their plan to become successes in the world of rap music. Creator Glover compared season 3 of his Emmy-winning show to Kanye West’s musical success before filming began in the spring of 2021. “I align the seasons, I think, to me, like Kanye records,” he said during an Emmys FYC screening in June 2018. “I feel like this is our Graduation. This is probably our most accessible but also the realest — an honest version of it — and I feel like the most enjoyable, like the third album.” The Solo: A Star Wars Story actor has since teased the upcoming season via social media, sharing behind-the-scenes photos of him and his costars, Henry, LaKeith Stanfield (who plays Darius) and Zazie Beetz (who portrays Van) having fun in Europe, which is where the new stories will take place. [embed]https://youtu.be/Gq9slWovcCc[/embed] It wasn’t until December 2021, however, that FX announced when fans would be able to see what Glover and his team have been working on since April of that year. “We are thrilled to have Atlanta back with a new season on March 24th,” FX Entertainment president Eric Schrier said in a press release at the time. “Once again, Donald Glover, the producers and stellar cast have delivered another signature season synonymous with the excellence that makes Atlanta so great.” The hit comedy, which premiered in 2016, has won five Emmy Awards. Its second season alone earned 16 Emmy nominations in 2018, taking home three trophies for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy with Katt Williams’ performance, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series and Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series. Glover, for his part, won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2017 for the witty role. That same year, the show took home the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Halloween Teaser

Glover released a one-minute clip in October 2021 teasing what’s to come for the Atlanta characters. The ominous trailer showed glimpses of different landscapes, statues in museums, a European city and stacks of chairs with creepy images on television sets as a voice said, “It’s after the end of the world, don’t you know that yet?” on repeat.

The teaser ended with Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles sitting alone in front of a coffin staring straight into the camera while two figures stood facing the wall behind him.

Who Is Coming Back?

Glover, Henry, Stanfield and Beetz confirmed their return for the upcoming season in April 2021 when they appeared in a pixelated video from filming day one of season 3.

What Has Donald Glover Teased?

“While I’m here: ‘Atlanta’ s3+s4 are going to be some of the best television ever made,” the Community alum tweeted in November 2020. “Sopranos only ones who can touch us.” Glover has since deleted the message.

Where Was It Filmed?

The cast was spotted filming in London in the spring of 2021. They later jetted off to Paris and Amsterdam to shoot different scenes from season 3.

What Can Fans Expect Story Wise?

“Taking place almost entirely in Europe, season 3 finds Earn, Alfred [or] ‘Paper Boi,’ Darius and Van in the midst of a successful European tour, as the group navigates their new surroundings as outsiders, and struggle to adjust to the newfound success they had aspired to,” the network teased in December 2021.

Will There Be a Season 4?

FX chairman John Landgraf confirmed in August 2021 that both seasons 3 and 4 were written amid the coronavirus pandemic shooting delays — and were filmed at the same time.

"I think we'll be able to lock down an actual date for Season 3 and maybe for both cycles within the next couple of months,” he said during the network’s Television Critics Association panel, noting he “adores” the scripts for both upcoming seasons.

Richer Thoughts Ahead

FX released a fuller trailer for season 3 of the Emmy-winning series in December 2021. In the clip, Earn, Al “Paper Boi”, Darius and Van are seen traveling through Europe while Earn follows his cousin Al on his music tour with Clark County (RJ Walker).

Things appear to be very different across the pond as glimpses of a strange man in a Dalmatian suit, Earn getting patted down at a security checkpoint and a woman in Amsterdam’s red-light district snapping a photo of Al pop up on the screen. The topic of racism ending is also brought up as moments of the group’s adventures play out.

“Do I gotta get naked for this?” Al says at one point while looking at what seems to be a party invitation. Earn replies, “Nudity isn’t required I think.” Al, however, isn’t convinced adding, “Psh, I don’t know … Europe.”
