10 Shows You Should Be Watching Before Emmys 2020: 'The Mandalorian,' 'Succession' and More

Bring out the popcorn! Plenty of binge-worthy shows that have something for every TV lover's appetite made the nominations list ahead of the 2020 Emmy Awards. The Mandalorian earned lots of Emmy recognition this season with 15 nominations for the Disney+ drama series. The latest installment of the Star Wars franchise is set five years after the events of the 1983 film Return of the Jedi. The story follows lone bounty hunter Din Djarin's (Pedro Pascal) adventures in the aftermath of the fall of the empire. The Mandalorians are a race of warriors featured in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Boba Fett was a bounty hunter in the original Star Wars trilogy, who wore the Mandalorian armor as did his father, Jango Fett. Show creator Jon Favreau told ABC News in November 2019 that he was intrigued by the Mandalorians after watching Boba Fett in the earlier movies. "A Mandalorian is alluded to in the original films that I grew up with," the director, 53, explained. "He was a bounty hunter and he wore Mandalorian armor. There was such a fascination with that character even though he didn’t do much in the films." Favreau added, "I like the image of the Mandalorian because it really hearkened back to the Westerns and samurai films that had originally influenced Lucas. It’s a deconstructed version of Clint Eastwood in The Man with No Name. That’s a great, mysterious, fun character to see the world through." The drama centers on the dysfunctional Roy family as they fight for control of their global media and hospitality empire amid patriarch Logan Roy's (Brian Cox) declining health. Showrunner Jesse Armstrong told HBO that the Roys were based on multiple powerful families in the media mixed with some real-life experience. "We thought of famous media families like the Hearsts, to modern-day Redstone, John Malone, Robert Fitz of Comcast, Murdoch, and Robert and Rebekah Mercer, who founded Breitbart," the producer, 48, said. "Lots of real-life moguls. We collected a myriad of these kinds of relationships that we knew about." He added, "And then like all creative people, you raid a surprising range of relationships that you've known from your own life. So, lots and lots of places." The Mandalorian

The Disney+ drama is the first live-action Star Wars TV series in the history of the franchise. The show follows the intergalactic adventures of bounty hunter Din Djarin. The series also introduced fan-favorite character The Child, who was affectionally dubbed Baby Yoda. The Mandalorian is now streaming on Disney+.

Succession

The HBO series — which was nominated for 18 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama series — follows the Roy family's challenges as their aging father begins to step back from their global media company. Succession is now streaming on HBO Max.

Insecure

Issa Rae spearheaded the HBO comedy series, which tells the misadventures of Issa (Rae) and her best friend Molly (Yvonne Orji) as they tackle their insecurities in their careers and love lives. The series earned three nominations, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series. Insecure is now streaming on HBO Max.

Schitts Creek

The popular sitcom — which became a cult favorite during its six-season run — followed Johnny Rose and his family after they find themselves broke and are forced to leave their pampered lives. The family starts over in a small town called Schitt's Creek, a town they bought years earlier as a joke. Schitt's Creek gained critical acclaim for its outstanding cast including Eugene Levy, Dan Levy and Catherine O'Hara, who all received Emmy nominations. Schitt's Creek is now streaming on Netflix.

Euphoria

The HBO drama follows a group of teens as they navigate sex, love, drugs and trauma. Fans fell in love with lead character Rue, which earned Zendaya her first Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Euphoria is now streaming on Netflix.

Ozark

The Netflix crime drama stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney as a married couple who move their family to the Ozarks for money laundering. The series received 18 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. Ozark is now streaming on HBO Max.

Watchmen

The HBO limited series is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore. Watchmen is set in an alternate reality of the United States and is centered on events surrounding racist violence in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2019. The superhero series received 26 Emmy nominations, including Lead Actress in a Limited Series for  Regina King. Watchmen is now streaming on Netflix.

Pose

The FX drama — created by showrunner Ryan Murphy — follows the thriving underground ballroom culture in New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The series features the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles in the history of television. Billy Porter received an Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, which he won in 2019. Pose is now streaming on Netflix.

Better Call Saul

The Breaking Bad spinoff series follows the evolution of con artist Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) from respectable attorney to his criminal lawyer alter ego, Saul Goodman. The Outstanding Drama nominated show features plenty of familiar faces from Breaking Bad, including Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring) who received an Emmy nomination for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Better Call Saul is now streaming on Netflix.

Normal People

The Hulu drama follows the relationship between Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal), as they learn about each other and themselves during their undergraduate years in Trinity College. Normal People is now streaming on Netlfix.
