Hugh Hefner's Ex Compares Playboy Mansion to Manson Family and More 'Secrets of Playboy' Revelations

The dark side of Playboy. Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt and more of Hugh Hefner's ex-girlfriends opened up about their time with the media mogul in the new A&E docuseries Secrets of Playboy. "At the mansion, the indoctrination, I feel, starts almost immediately when you're there, and you start hearing about how wonderful Hef is from his circle of his friends," the Vegas Diaries author, 42, said during the series premiere on January 24. "So, in the beginning, Hef is what you would now call a love bomber. He's somebody who tells you 'I love you' almost immediately." The Holly's World alum dated the late Playboy founder from 2001 to 2008, during which time she lived in the famous Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. Since writing her 2015 tell-all memoir, Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny, she's been outspoken about her experiences with Hefner, who died in 2017 at age 91. In the new series, former Playboy models and ex-girlfriends of Hefner noted that many of Madison's claims mirrored their own memories of life at the mansion. "I know for a fact the rules she had to follow," Carla Howe, a former model, said in the premiere. "You're imprisoned in that Playboy [world]. Like, you can't do your own thing." [sendtonews type="float" key="qDelZDgqHv-2835151-14453"] Madison recalled one incident when Hefner allegedly "flipped out" on her because she cut her hair shorter than he liked. "I remember when she cut her hair," Jonathan Baker, a friend of Hefner's, recalled. "He was very unhappy about it." Stefan Tetenbaum, who worked as Hefner's personal valet from 1978 to 1981, alleged that life wasn't easy for employees at the mansion, either. "He thought he was the king, the emperor," Tetenbaum claimed. "We were just servants. Everybody else was invisible. He didn't want to know our names. He just gave us directions." According to Tetenbaum, staffers were supposed to avoid contact with the women in the mansion, even if they tried to initiate a conversation. "We were told you cannot talk to the girls," he explained. "You're not their friend. You work for Mr. Hefner — you don't work for them." Baker and some of Hefner's other friends claim that they never saw him treat his girlfriends with anything less than kindness. Madison, however, noted that those acquaintances didn't always see what was happening behind closed doors. "I feel like on The Girls Next Door, Hef was portrayed as, like, a kindly grandpa, but that's not how he is," the reality star explained. "It would make me so angry how manipulative he was. Constant Surveillance

In the first episode, multiple former employees and models alleged that Hefner was constantly watching everyone in his orbit via hidden cameras and microphones. "Many of the girls wanted to tell you their problems, and that made us all very nervous," Tetenbaum recalled. "We had to be very careful because we knew we were being monitored." (In one throwback interview clip, Hefner himself admitted that he had video cameras hidden around his property.)

Mitch Butler, who worked as Hefner's butler from 1983 to 1989, added that the Chicago native hired ex-cops to work security at the mansion. "Some of them were L.A. cops, some of them were Beverly Hills cops," he explained. "Some of them were detectives, so it was very serious."

Silencing Dissent

Sondra Theodore, who dated Hefner from 1976 to 1981, claimed that "things were done to shush people up, to get them out of the way" while she lived at the mansion. "He had tapes on everybody."

Tetenbaum, for his part, claimed that Hefner's team stopped him when he wanted to publish a book about his time in the Playboy world. "I got threatened," he alleged. "[They said], 'You're not gonna put this book out or we can find you anywhere you go. You can't hide from us.' It was very frightening."

Jennifer Saginor published Playground: A Childhood Lost Inside the Playboy Mansion in 2005, but it wasn't an easy project. When she embarked on a book tour, she claimed that Hefner's team got all of her dates canceled. "He didn't want people to know what was really going on," she explained. "Over time, I realized I was just one of the many people who were silenced."

PJ Masten, who worked as a bunny mother in L.A. and Chicago from 1972 to 1982, claimed that her job was to keep any potential problems under wraps. "I worked in six clubs. Every club had a scandal — at least one, if not many more," she alleged. "I had to keep my mouth closed if I wanted to keep my job. There was a lot of collateral damage within the Playboy organization, a lot, and the majority of the collateral damage is toward women."

Miki Garcia, who was a Playmate and head of promotions from 1973 to 1982, claimed that Hefner sent someone to pay her off when she was working on a book. She became so fearful of potential retaliation that she hired a bodyguard.

An Underage Resident

Saginor lived at the mansion starting at age 6 because her father, Mark Saginor, was Hefner's personal physician at the time. Though she initially enjoyed living in a giant house with tons of amenities, she later began to see the dark side. When she was still underage, she began an affair with a model she referred to only as Kendall. After Hefner found about it, Jennifer claimed he propositioned her and Kendall for a threesome. Kendall rejected the offer and left the room in tears.

The Playground author also recalled adult men in the house teaching her how to "critique" photographs of models. "I was trained how to view women in the way that they did — as commodities," she alleged.

Hef's Diet

"He drank around 35, 40 Pepsis a day. I had to wrap them in a special red napkin according to the instructions," Tetenbaum claimed of his former boss. "He ate mostly M&Ms, two or three pounds a day, and red licorice."

Keeping Tabs

Former cover model Charlotte Lewis claimed that even Hefner's wives weren't exempt from his surveillance policies, recalling an incident when she invited his second wife, Kimberley Conrad, over for lunch. "She was not really allowed out of the mansion," Lewis claimed. "So, she arrived with a bodyguard who was constantly on his telephone to Mr. Hefner: 'She's going up the stairs, she's going to the loo.'"

The 'Cult-Like' Atmosphere

In a previously released clip, Madison described life at the mansion as "cult-like," but Theodore went so far as to compare Hefner to Charles Manson. "There were so many similarities with the way the girls followed everything he said, and we were all one big happy family," she said. Photographer Sharmagne Leland-St. John-Sylbert claimed that Hefner was fascinated by the Manson Family and had somehow obtained home videos of the group that were filmed before their infamous 1969 murder spree.

"It was cult-like," Garcia claimed. "The women had been groomed and led to believe they were part of this family. And he really did believe he owned these women. We had Playmates that overdosed. There were Playmates that committed suicide."

Madison, for her part, recalled that she considered suicide while living in the mansion. "I remember there was a point in time a couple years in, after we had gone out and after we'd all been in the bedroom," she said. "Everybody was leaving and walking out and I was in the bathtub, and I just wanted to drown myself. I just felt like I was in this cycle of misery."

Support for Holly's Claims

Theodore echoed Madison's previous claims that Hefner liked to pit his girlfriends against one another, leaving some women feeling bullied and alone.

Marquardt, who starred alongside Madison on The Girls Next Door, said she began to notice a change in her costar while they still lived together. "I could definitely see that she was getting depressed and sad and her demeanor was starting to change," the former Bridget's Sexiest Beaches host, 48, said. "Hef would be pretty abrasive in the way he said things to Holly."

In one instance, the Girls Next Door cast had gone to stay at the Queen Mary hotel. When Marquardt tried to get Madison to come with her to explore the ship, she claimed Hefner pulled Madison's hair and refused to let her leave his room. "Hef was definitely very needy of Holly's time and he always wanted her next to him," the Oregon native recalled.

The Bunny Costume

The bunny costume worn by waitresses at Playboy clubs became an iconic piece of pop culture, but some of the women who wore them don't have fond memories of the outfit. "A lot of girls had kidney infections because we were cinched in," Masten claimed of the corseted costume, which had 18 metal stays inside. "We used to go into the ladies' room and take our shoes off — which were encrusted with blood — and stick [our feet] in the toilet bowl and keep flushing it. It was like a whirlpool to get the swelling down and hope that your shoes could fit."

Susanne Singer, who worked as a bunny in Century City, California, from 1972 to 1984, alleged that costumes would not be altered if a waitress gained weight. "If you gained five pounds, those 18 metal stays?" she said in the show's third episode. "You couldn't breathe."

Weighing In

"Once a month we got weighed in, and there was a chart in the bunny room next to the scale, and it was humiliating," Masten alleged. "Everybody could see it, and if you were five pounds over, you had a warning. If you didn't get it down for next month, you were suspended until you got your weight down."

Masten added that bunny mothers were given a checklist for making sure women who worked at the club were "appropriately" dressed for work. "We had to evaluate them on their appearance," Masten claimed, alleging that things including "crepe-y skin, sagging breasts, bags under their eyes [and] crooked teeth" were not allowed.

Horrific Crimes

Several participants in Secrets of Playboy alleged that multiple women were sexually assaulted by members of Playboy clubs. The clubs had strict rules that members and visitors were not allowed to touch the women who worked there, but once the bunnies left Playboy property, the rules did not apply.

"From what I know and what I've been told, there were many young women that were assaulted after hours," Masten claimed in the January 31 episode. "Girls were parked outside on the streets or in the parking lot, and I was fearful that they would be attacked because there were keyholders that would follow them out to their cars." She eventually asked the general manager of the club where she worked if busboys or bartenders could walk the women to their cars at night, but he allegedly said no. "He absolutely refused," she alleged. "'They're big girls, they can take care of themselves.' That's what he told me."

Suzanne Charneski, who worked as a bunny at the Great Gorge, New Jersey, club from 1979 to 1982, claimed there was one incident that everyone knew about but could not discuss. "About a year or so before I got there, there was a group of girls who were approached by some men who came into the resort and told them they were big Hollywood producers, and they wanted them to be in a movie," Charneski recalled. The women agreed to meet the men, who were not really producers, outside of the Playboy property. The men allegedly drugged and raped the women, who later told the staff at Playboy what had happened.

"These girls were fired," Masten claimed. "They were told to get off the property and never come back." According to Charneski, employees were told they could get fired if they discussed the incident.

Masten alleged that the incident was only one of many that she knew about while working for Playboy. "There were girls that were silenced after being raped in parking lots outside the clubs," she claimed. "In the 10 years that I worked for Playboy, I would venture to say that there were probably 40 to 50 young women that were silenced by Playboy because of abuse, sexual abuse."

Scot-Free VIPs

Though Playboy bunnies weren't supposed to date club members, Masten claimed that the rules were different for VIPs, who were often celebrities. She said the "most horrific" thing she knew about involved Don Cornelius, the Soul Train host who died in 2012. Masten alleged that Cornelius invited two sisters he met at the club to his house, where he kept them for three days.

"They were tied up and bound, and the sister could hear her screaming and there were wooden objects that she was sodomized with," Masten claimed. "And she could hear her other sister being brutalized. It was horrible, horrible."

According to Masten, one of the women got out of the room where she was held and called the bunny mother, who alerted Playboy security but not the police. Cornelius' membership allegedly remained active, and Masten said he returned to the club the following week.

"I think Hefner knew all about this," Masten alleged. "Because [former Playboy head of security] Joe Piastro told me he had to do a report every single day if anything happened, and Hefner read the security reports."

The Cleanup Crew

Jim Ellis, who worked as Hefner's bodyguard from 1980 to 1981, claimed it was "absolutely true" that Playboy had a "cleanup crew" that trie to keep scandals under the radar. "When I was first hired, Joe Piastro sat me down and he says, 'If you ever go to the National Enquirer, if you ever talk to the media about anything that you see here, you're gonna wish you hadn't,'" Ellis claimed.

Both Garcia and Masten claimed that they were part of cleanup crews at various points, with Masten pointing to the alleged Cornelius incident as one that she still regrets keeping a secret.

'Drugs Everywhere'

During the February 7 episode, Theodore alleged that there were "drugs everywhere" when she lived at the mansion in the 1970s. "Hef pretended he wasn't involved in any hard drug use at the mansion, but that was just a lie," she claimed. "Quaaludes down the line were used for sex." Theodore also alleged that Hefner sent her "countless times" to pick up drugs for him. "Hef used cocaine," she claimed. "He used more than that. He had a drawer full of drugs. I discovered it when he started giving me the key to that drawer."

Lisa Loving Barrett, who worked as Hefner's executive assistant from 1977 to 1989, reiterated Theodore's claims about a locked drug drawer, alleging that it was in his bedroom. "We would have prescriptions in some of our names," she claimed. "There were prescriptions in Sondra's name and Hef's name and my name." When asked where the prescriptions went after they were picked up, Barrett replied, "We gave them directly to Hef."

The Case of Bobbie Arnstein

Arnstein worked as Hefner's executive assistant in Chicago until January 1975, when she died by suicide. Before her death, she was arrested on drug possession charges and later convicted of conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Ted O'Connor, a retired homicide detective who investigated the case, said that evidence persuaded him Arnstein was responsible for her own death, but other participants in the docuseries pursued other theories.

Judge Joan B. Gottschall, who was Arnstein's lawyer, alleged that her former client received a phone call warning her to be vigilant because there was a "contract out on her life." Prior to her death, Arnstein had also been subpoenaed for an investigation into the death of Adrienne Pollack, another Playboy employee. Pollack died of an apparent drug overdose in 1973 after moving out of the mansion with her boyfriend. Masten, who worked at the Chicago Playboy club after both deaths, claimed that other employees told her that both Pollack and Arnstein "supplied drugs" for parties held at the Chicago mansion.

Snuff Films and Bestiality

During the February 14 episode, two women alleged that they witnessed bestiality at the Playboy Mansion in the 1970s. Theodore claimed she saw Hefner engaged in a sexual act with a dog at some point during her time there. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing." Masten alleged that Piastro told her about a separate occasion that Linda Lovelace visited the mansion and was forced to perform oral sex on a German shepherd.

Theodore also claimed that Hefner once told her he enjoyed watching snuff films. "I told him very clearly that he was not going down that highway with me," she recalled. "I thought, 'How could he like this? How could I care for him?'

Not What They Signed Up For

In the February 28 episode, multiple women claimed that the Playboy promotions department sent them on jobs that actually had nothing to do with modeling. "It was like they were pimping us out a little bit," claimed Dona Speir, recalling times that she was sent to make appearances at casinos. The former model also claimed that Playmates were told to hang out with high rollers, alleging that she witnessed women leave the casino floor and go upstairs with those men.

Rebekka Armstrong recalled two alleged incidents where Playboy sent her to do promotional appearances that felt more one-on-one meetings with men. "I remember barricading myself in the room and putting a chair underneath the door," she said. "I called Playboy and I was like, 'You gotta get me out of here, this isn't real, this isn't happening.' It was [former promotions director] Valerie Cragin on the other end of the line. ... She calls me back and says, 'What we're understanding is that the client is very upset with you because you are the one who has acted inappropriately.'"

The former bodybuilder claimed that Playboy sent her on a separate trip to Alaska that was billed as a modeling gig but ended with her being attacked by a client. "He came looking for me later," Armstrong alleged of the man she met in Alaska. "He found out where I lived. I honestly don't know everything that happened, he drugged me. I don't know what [he did] to me. He did a lot of really horrific things."

The Video Revolution

The magazine got more risqué in the 1970s as competitors including Penthouse and Hustler entered the scene, but models weren't always comfortable with the increasingly revealing photo shoots they were asked to do. By the 1980s, video also became part of the deal, but Playmates were sometimes surprised to find out that their footage had been released.

"That was soft porn," Theodore said during the February 28 episode, claiming that videos of her were released without her consent. "They had made me a porn star against my will."

Speir explained that many Playboy models felt video work was too close to pornography, especially because the company allegedly didn't keep track of where footage ended up after it was filmed. "Playboy had an obligation to protect us girls especially with our photos and videos," she said, claiming that Playboy footage surfaced on other explicitly pornographic websites. "They just opened the floodgates and let them go. It was all about the money." Cristy Thom, another former model, added, "My name is attached to every porn site you can imagine."

The Tapes

During the March 7 episode, multiple interviewees alleged that Hefner secretly recorded himself having sex with women without their consent — and after they'd already told him they didn't want to be filmed. "You told her that you weren't recording this," Theodore recalled of seeing one tape that Hefner allegedly claimed he hadn't made. "He goes, 'Do you think I really stopped it?' So, he did it anyway, and he had tapes on everybody." 

Tetenbaum claimed that the Playboy founder recorded "everything" that went on in his bedroom and maintained a library of the tapes that was off-limits to everyone else in the mansion. "Most of the time Hefner never participated, he just watched," the former valet alleged. "He was a voyeur. He would stage them. He thought of himself as a film director. He didn't want to be on the tapes. He wanted these girls and the stars, but many of the girls were devastated after what they were expected to do, what they were forced to do."

Celebrity Connections

Several participants in the docuseries alleged that Hefner knew about some of his guests' bad behavior and allowed them to keep coming to the mansion anyway. "Hef did tell me that Jim Brown brutalized women," Theodore claimed, referring to the former NFL player. "But why would he keep letting him come up? What's with that? Because he was a celebrity?" 

Ellis said he wasn't surprised when Bill Cosby, a frequent guest at the mansion, was arrested in 2015 after multiple women came forward with allegations of sexual assault. "None of that was a surprise," Ellis claimed. "I was there, I saw, I know what he did. Everybody that worked at the mansion knew that he was basically a predator. ... At the mansion, it was the wild west back then. There was rampant sexual exploitation. Bill Cosby was up there three to four times a week. He wasn't there to eat lunch." 

Masten, who in 2014 claimed the comedian raped her in 1979, alleged that Playboy management told her they couldn't help her because Cosby was too close with Hefner. "That next day, I called my boss and I told her that he raped me and he drugged me," Masten claimed in the March 7 episode. "And her reply was, 'That's Hefner's best friend. I suggest you shut your mouth if you want to keep your job.'" 

Cosby denied all of the allegations mentioned in the series, claiming in a statement to the network that none of them "have been substantiated by any legal process" and that they are "unsupported by any factual basis."

The Shadow Mansions

In the March 14 episode, Jennifer Saginor and other participants claimed that a network of "shadow mansions" popped up in the 1970s and flourished through the 1990s. Bernie Cornfeld, a friend and business partner of Hefner's was allegedly one of the first people to set up his own mini version of the Playboy Mansion, which he called Grayhall.

"Bernie would go prowling at night. He'd go prowling up in the dormitory and be having sex with the girls up there," claimed Sharmagne Leland-St. John-Sylbert, who worked for Cornfeld after previously being a Playboy bunny. "I realized that the modeling agency apparently fronted for Bernie's sexual appetite, so if you moved into the house, you became prey. You became one of his next conquests."

Blackmail Opportunities

Rachel Myers, a former model, alleged that she was lured to a shadow mansion by an associate of Hefner's whom she also saw at Playboy Mansion parties. "I was told that the way to get into the Playboy mansion was to show my boobs," she recalled. "I don't know, I just did it. Photos were taken, and there were photos on the table of multiple women, and so I just thought it was normal. And so that's how I got into the Playboy Mansion."

Jennifer claimed that she witnessed similar fake photo shoots at her father's house. "I just remember walking in on them and being, like, horrified," she alleged. "These girls were clearly drugged and not coherent. Maybe they would also have somebody, like, videotaping them, and then that videotape could be used as blackmail so they wouldn't tell anyone, or so that they'd sort of fall into this underground system of being available. ... Of course Hefner's aware of the system. All of his friends were housing these girls, and they were the ones who owned the mini mansions."

Mark and Hef

Except for a brief distancing that happened after Mark was arrested on assault charges (which were later dropped), Hefner and his doctor remained friends until Hef's death in 2017. According to Mark's daughter, however, they weren't just friends. "It's my personal belief that the love of Hef's life was my father," Jennifer claimed in the March 14 episode. "My father and Hef had a spiritual connection that I don't believe any of these wives or girlfriends could ever compete against."

Theodore claimed to have witnessed Mark and Hefner engaged in sexual activity together when she lived at the mansion. "Mark became Hef's best friend," she alleged. "They took things really far. They became more than best friends." When asked if they were lovers, she replied, "Yeah. Yeah, they became that."

Mark, for his part, denied all of his daughter's allegations in a statement to A&E.

'I Will Never Forget'

In the March 21 episode, Krabacher claimed that Hefner raped her in 1983 while she was living at the mansion. According to the former model, she visited his room one night to discuss her anxiety about the upcoming Playmate of the Year decision. She alleged that Hefner offered her a pill which she initially thought might have been an aspirin, but she later came to believe he drugged her.

"I woke up with him on top of me," Krabacher claimed. "He was naked and my pants were off, my pajama bottoms were off. I thought that I was having a nightmare because it didn't seem possible. ... I pushed him off of me and I think it made him mad. I just remember [thinking], 'I've gotta tell somebody.'"

Krabacher alleged that she told Marilyn Grabowski, then the magazine's photo editor, about the encounter. "She said, 'Oh, that's all? Don't let it bother you. It's nothing. It's nothing. He won't even remember it,'" the former Playmate claimed. "And I'm like, 'But I will never forget it.'"

Grabowksi denied Krabacher's recollection of events in a statement to A&E, calling the allegations about their conversation "untrue."

The Dorothy Stratten Connection

Dorothy Stratten was a Playmate who was murdered by her estranged husband, Paul Snider, in 1980. The late director Peter Bogdanovich, who briefly dated Stratten, later accused Hefner of being partly responsible for her death in his 1984 book, The Killing of the Unicorn: Dorothy Stratten 1960 – 1980.

During the March 21 episode of Secrets of Playboy, Madison revealed that she knew about Stratten's case while she lived at the mansion, but she didn't read Bogdanovich's book until she started working on her own memoir. At that point, she started to see eerie similarities between Stratten's life with Hefner and her own. "I always thought that Dorothy was somebody I'd never be able to relate to because she was always presented as this goddess," Madison explained. "But when I read the book, I was really just creeped out by how similar everything was. Everything that happened back in her day was so mirrored to what was going on in the early 2000s."

Life After 'The Girls Next Door'

Karissa and Kristina Shannon, the twin sisters who starred in season 6 of The Girls Next Door, appeared in a bonus episode of Secrets of Playboy to discuss their time in the Playboy mansion. Now 32, the Michigan natives were 18 when they moved in with Hefner. "It’s like you’re in a cult, the isolation that I had," Karissa said during the March 28 episode. "I was a shell of a person."

The twins also alleged that they caught chlamydia from Hefner, who they claimed didn't use condoms during sexual encounters. Later, Karissa discovered that she was expecting a baby that she believed was Hefner's. “I didn’t think it was possible," she said, adding that Madison had previously tried to have a baby with Hefner but hadn't gotten pregnant. "I felt disgusted with my body. I felt like there was an alien inside me. I was just grossed out. I just wanted to get it over and done with."

Kristina called clinics for her sister, but they knew they couldn't ask security to drive them to an appointment because Hefner would find out. Instead, they asked their friend the rapper Juicy J to take them. Karissa entered the clinic through a back entrance so as not to be seen by the paparazzi.

When asked if she made the right decision by choosing to terminate the pregnancy, Karissa replied that she "100 percent" feels she did. "Everyone to each their own, but for me, it’s like rape," she claimed. "He would use control mechanisms completely throughout everything, so I’m happy that I did the abortion.”

The twins added that they've both been diagnosed with PTSD since their time in the mansion, and neither of them have been in any serious relationships. "We’re still dealing with it," Karissa said. "I don’t think that that part is ever gonna go away — that part of us that was taken will never go away."

Final Allegations

During the April 4 series finale, former model Audrey Huskey came forward with new allegations about Hefner. Huskey claimed that she decided to try her hand at modeling for Playboy when she turned 18. After her 1994 photo shoot, she alleged that Hefner invited her to his room to take a look at some pictures from the session. He showed her the photos, but Huskey claimed that things quickly took a turn. 

"I froze. He got on top of me, and I just froze," she alleged, claiming that Hefner offered her a joint before raping her. "I didn't say anything. I didn't give him permission. What was I gonna do? If I had said no, would he have stopped? I don't know." 

Huskey was supposed to complete a second day of photos after the alleged incident, but she decided not to go. She claimed she later received a "termination letter" from Playboy, which never published her photos. Huskey also alleged that Hefner's then-wife, Kimberley Conrad, called her at home to ask whether Hefner had invited her to the bedroom. "Yeah, of course he invited me, but I didn't tell her that," Huskey said. "I didn't want to get him in trouble. I mean, that's so crazy."
