James Corden Interviews Prince Harry About Meghan Markle, Archie, ‘The Crown’ and More: Everything We Learned

Hanging with Harry! James Corden invited Prince Harry to take a tour of California on a double-decker bus on the Thursday, February 25, episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden. During the 17-minute segment, the pair talked about everything from the Duke of Sussex’s wife, Meghan Markle, and their 21-month-old son, Archie, to his grandparents Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip to what he really thinks about The Crown. While the former actress, 39, did not join her husband during the fun-filled afternoon, Corden, 42, snatched Harry’s iPhone from him at one point and FaceTimed with Meghan. “How do I find the duchess? ‘M’?” he asked the British royal while looking through the phone’s contacts. During the call, the Los Angeles native told the comedian that she and Harry have “done enough moving” in recent months, referencing their relocation to Montecito, California, after they stepped back as senior royals in March 2020. She then revealed one of her pet names for her husband, referring to him as Haz. “I didn’t know we were calling you Haz now,” Corden interjected as he turned to look at Harry, who responded, “Well, you’re not my wife, so.” [jwplayer siMxz0oM] The Invictus Games founder filmed the late-night segment before he and Meghan announced on Valentine’s Day that they are expecting their second child. It was also taped before Buckingham Palace confirmed that the couple will not return as working members of the royal family after being offered a 12-month trial period. “Following conversations with the duke, the queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the royal family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service,” a palace spokesperson said in a statement on February 19. “The honorary military appointments and royal patronages held by the duke and duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty before being redistributed among working members of the royal family.” Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson later released a pointed statement that read, “As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the U.K. and around the world and have offered their continued support to the organizations they have represented regardless of official role. We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.” The duo are set to address their decision during a joint interview on CBS on March 7 in addition to discussing their marriage, their growing family and their philanthropic work. He’d Never Been on a Double-Decker Bus — Until Now

“This is very nice. This is the first time I’ve been on an open-top bus,” Harry told Corden at the beginning of the segment.

“When I was in London, I always [saw] them cruising around, tourists. I was like, ‘You know, that would be really good fun’ because when you live in an area, you never actually go sightseeing. I’ve always wanted to go sightseeing.”

He Can Rap

While visiting the house from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the London native rapped the opening lines to the theme song originally performed by Will Smith — with some help from the late-night host. He then stopped inside because he was “dying for a pee,” assuring the homeowner, “I’ve had a COVID test. I’m good!”

When He Knew Meghan Was The One

Harry told Corden that he knew by his second date with the Suits alum that there was “something pretty special” between them.

“It was just the fact that, the way we hit it off with each other, and we were just so comfortable in each other’s company,” he explained. “Dating with me — with any member of the royal family, I guess — is kind of flipped upside down. All the dates become dinners or watching the TV or chatting at home, and then eventually once you become a couple, then you venture out to dinners, to the cinema and everything else. So everything was back to front with us. So actually, we got to spend an enormous amount of time just the two of us, rather than going to friends’ houses or out for dinner where there were other distractions. There were no distractions, and that was great. It was an amazing thing. We went from zero to 60 in the first two months.”

“Depending on how the day’s been, we do Archie’s tea, give him a bath, read him a book, put him down, go downstairs,” Harry said. “Meg might cook a meal, might order a takeaway, go upstairs, sit in bed, turn the TV on, watch some Jeopardy!, maybe watch a little bit of Netflix.”

What He Thinks About ‘The Crown’

“They don’t pretend to be news. It’s fictional,” the prince said. “But it’s loosely based on the truth. Of course it’s not strictly accurate. … It gives you a rough idea of what that lifestyle, what the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else, what can come from that. I’m way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family or my wife or myself because it’s the difference between [The Crown] is obviously fiction, take it how you will, but this is being reported on as fact because you’re supposedly news. I have a real issue with that.”

He then revealed that he would like to see Damian Lewis play him on the historical drama.

“[My son] is hysterical. He’s got the most amazing personality,” Harry raved. “He’s already putting three, four words together. He’s already singing songs. [His first word was] ‘crocodile’ — three syllables!”

“My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas, and Meg said a waffle maker,” he said. “She sent us a waffle maker for Archie. So [for] breakfast now, Meg makes up a beautiful, organic mix, [puts it] in the waffle maker, flips it, out it comes. He loves it. … Archie wakes up in the morning and just goes, ‘Waffle?’”

What His Family’s Life Will Look Like Away From the Royals

“[It’s] a slightly different version but a continuation of what we were doing back in the U.K.,” the former helicopter pilot told Corden. “That’s what our life, my life is always going to be about. Meghan signed up to that, and the two of us enjoy doing that. Try to bring some compassion and try to make people happy and try to change the world in any small way that we can.”

He then clarified that he and Meghan were “stepping back rather than stepping down” from their roles within the royal family, adding, “It was a really difficult environment, as I think a lot of people saw. We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health. I was like, ‘This is toxic.’ So, I did what any husband and what any father would do, and I was like, ‘I need to get my family out of here.’ But we never walked away.”
