A tough goodbye. September 8 will forever mark the beginning of the end of Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ more than a decade-long run on E!. Kim Kardashian broke the news that KUWTK will wrap up in 2021 after season 20. The KKW Beauty mogul confirmed the news via Instagram by dedicating a heartfelt statement to the show’s “amazing” fans. “It is with heavy hearts that we’ve made the difficult decision as a family to say goodbye to Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” she wrote at the time. “After what will be 14 years, 20 seasons, hundreds of episodes and numerous spin-off shows, we are beyond grateful to all of you who’ve watched us for all of these years — through the good times, the bad times, the happiness, the tears, and the many relationships and children. Kim starred alongside siblings Kourtney Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Rob Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner, her mom, Kris Jenner, and former stepdad, Caitlyn Jenner. The Beginning of The End

In her farewell statement, Kim gave a special shout out to the fans that have been there from the beginning. “I am so incredibly grateful to everyone who has watched and supported me and my family these past 14 incredible years,” she wrote via Instagram on September 8. “This show made us who we are and I will be forever in debt to everyone who played a role in shaping our careers and changing our lives forever.”

Accepting Change

Khloé shared her thoughts on the shocking news following sister Kim’s big announcement. “I am so grateful and thankful to everyone who has supported us and been there through it all,” the Good American cofounder shared via Instagram on September 8. “I’m too emotional to fully express myself at the moment.”

Having a Heart to Heart

“It really hasn’t [hit me yet],” Kris explained of the cancelation announcement during an On Air With Ryan Seacrest appearance on September 9. “I got very, very emotional this morning. I woke up and was in the gym at 5 with Khloé and Kim, and we just kind of sat there and looked at each other and said, ‘Whoa, what a ride.’”

Hard Pill to Swallow

Kris revealed which of her adult children took the news the hardest. “We had to tell the crew yesterday so we were all crying,” she told Seacrest. “I think Khloé … is the one who is taking it the hardest and hasn’t stopped crying since we announced. It’s been a hard decision, I’m not going to lie. It’s been very emotional.”

Learning About the News

Breaking her silence on the matter, Caitlyn shared how she first heard about the series coming to an end. “Nobody called me, I heard it through the media,” she said on Australia’s The Morning Show on September 9. “Was I surprised? No, but that show … it’s probably the greatest reality show in history.”

The Olympian added, “There are over 500 episodes of 14 years. These girls have done just an amazing job to keep the show going, come up with material.”

Bring on the Tears

Kim admitted to crying a lot after publicizing the show’s cancelation. “Oh, it was honestly the most emotional day. The tears. I mean, I think I was crying all weekend,” she told Grazia magazine in an interview published on October 6. “I’ll probably get emotional now on the phone. It was just a really emotional decision.”

Getting Emotional

Caitlyn released an emotional YouTube video addressing KUWTK wrapping up. “In a lot of ways, it’s really sad that it’s over with. It was such a great vehicle for my kids,” she said on September 14. “The good news is, because of this show and because of their willingness to work, not only on the show but as entrepreneurs, certainly everybody is going to be fine from this point on."

The I Am Cait alum added that she has “the best home movies in life” because she “watched all my kids grow up on the network.”

Pumping the Brakes

During her On Air With Ryan Seacrest interview on September 9, Kris explained why now was the right time to move on. “I think the number 20 used to sound good until 2020, but the number 20 just seemed like the right time I think for us to take a minute and breathe and everybody slow down a bit … figure out what our next steps are,” she explained. “We’ve had such an amazing run and we’re so grateful for every single moment and everyone we work with.”

Times Have Changed

During a WWD interview, Kris said that social media contributed to the show ending. “When we first started, there was no Instagram or Snapchat or other social media platforms,” she said in the interview published on October 16. “The world has changed. Now there are so many, the viewer doesn't have to wait three or four months to see an episode. We can give them all of the information anyone would ever want to know in real-time.”

The momager continued, “Social media is the fastest and most controlled way to get the message out. The consumer gets to see the products the girls are working on in real-time, and they know we’re going to get it out the door pretty quickly. The girls want them to be part of the journey to keep them engaged.”

Next Chapter

On October 27, Kylie opened up about the “sad” decision her family made to end the show. “It’s the end of a chapter, but we all came to the decision that it was just time to just move on and let it be great,” the beauty mogul explained to YouTuber James Charles. “We could just keep going and going and going, but we’ve just got to let it be.”

Grateful for the Memories

Kim opened up about saying goodbye to the E! series during a March 15 interview with Good Morning Vogue. “I’m happy we were able to be on [air] for so long, and for people to see that [evolution],” she told Vogue contributor Jonathan Van Meter. “We didn’t really expect it to go on this long. We were just having fun. I think we’re all so happy we made it to 20 seasons and genuinely so excited. To have all of those memories and home videos for almost 15 years … That’s amazing.”

The Skims founder also revealed that the strangest thing about rewatching the show from the beginning was seeing how all of their voices have changed. “That the biggest mystery to me and my sisters,” she said, before talking about why saying goodbye to the crew was the hardest part of ending the show. “We all really love doing this and we love our crew so much so it was a huge decision for all of us. It was an emotional decision. Our crew is family to us.”
