"Everyone's got a hobby, right? You're mine,” Austin Nichols’ Griffen Grayson declared in the 2001 movie Holiday in the Sun. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s movies all had one thing in common — cute boys — and Nichols, Jared Padalecki, and Riley Smith are among the Olsen twins’ former onscreen love interests. “You try and play it cool and downplay it,” Padalecki recalled to Tribute Canada about playing the love interest for Mary-Kate’s Roxy in the 2004 movie New York Minute. “It is a little nerve-wracking, especially because it’s their first [theatrical film release in years] so you don’t want to miss it up for them. … It was a fun little experience. She’s huge, the pressure is on.” Smith, for his part, played Ashley’s love interest, Jim, in New York Minute. He admitted to E! News at the 2004 premiere of the film that his onscreen kiss was cut short because of his nerves. “[The scene] was actually supposed to be a big, long kiss but I actually got nervous and made it a peck!” he said. “I screwed up!” Mary-Kate and Ashley, for their part, admitted at the time that they are always “very critical” of their performances in movies. “We usually just watch the kissing scene to make sure they look OK,” Mary-Kate told Extra in 2004. “There are certain scenes you care about.” [jwplayer hbxAMrol-l3ahXupL] While New York Minute, which also starred Eugene Levy, bombed at the box office, it may hold a special place in the hearts of some Mary-Kate and Ashley fans as it was the last film featuring both Olsens to date. While Ashley took a step back from acting altogether, Mary-Kate didn’t retire until 2011. Her last role was in the Vanessa Hudgens’ movie Beastly. “I look at photos of me, and I don’t feel connected to them at all,” Mary-Kate told Marie Claire in 2010. The former Full House stars subsequently shifted their focus to growing their fashion empire. Their joint net worth is an estimated $500 million. Ethan Peck

Peck, who played flower delivery boy Michel in 1999’s Passport to Paris, had the honor of being Mary-Kate’s first onscreen kiss.

“Because they were my age, I had some sort of peripheral awareness,” Peck told Uproxx about landing the role. “They weren’t a big presence in my mind but I was definitely aware of them. … Mary-Kate played my love interest in the movie and I remember Broker [Way] and I were each attracted to the opposite and it was equally reciprocated. But they were both great and we had a fun time. They were totally normal kids, as I recall.”

Peck went on to star in ABC Family’s TV adaptation of 10 Things I Hate You and CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery. He also had guest roles on Gossip Girl, Madam Secretary and Penny Dreadful: City of Angel.

Riley Smith

Smith’s acting credits post-New York Minute include 90210, True Blood, Nashville, Frequency and Life Sentence. Most recently, he took on the role of Ryan Hudson in the CW’s Nancy Drew, which was renewed for season 2 in May 2020.

Jared Padalecki

Padalecki took on the role of Trey in New York Minute after wrapping up his time on Gilmore Girls. In addition to reprising his role as Dean on the 2016 Netflix revival, Padalecki made a name for himself as Sam Winchester in the long-running CW series Supernatural. The fantasy TV series will wrap after 15 seasons in 2020.

Michelangelo Tommaso

Mary-Kate’s love interest in When In Rome, Paolo, stayed in Rome! Tommaso, who was born in Rome, Lazio, Italy, has a series of acting credits in Italian TV shows.  

“The twins, they did their own thing. It wasn’t traditionally the way I’ve seen it in all my other movies, the whole cast goes out together. I hung out with Michelangelo,” Derek Lee Nixon, who played Ryan in the 2002 movie, told Uproxx. “I had never seen a Mary-Kate and Ashley movie ’til my own. It wasn’t that I didn’t know who they were or anything. I was 19 when I shot When in Rome, so it wasn’t necessarily my demographic.”

Austin Nichols

After winning the heart of Mary-Kate’s Madison in Holiday in the Sun, Nichols joined the cast of One Tree Hill as his real-life girlfriend Sophia Bush’s onscreen love interest. Nichols was promoted to a series regular for season 7 in 2009 and remained on the show until the 2012 finale. The actor, who split from Bush after the show wrapped, has since appeared on The Walking Dead, Bates Motel and Ray Donovan.

Sam Saletta

The child actor, who played Ryan in the 1998 movie Billboard Dad, went on to appear in 7th Heaven and ER. He also had voice roles in Nickelodeon’s Rocket Power and Rugrats. Saletta has since shifted his attention to music, living in Los Angeles and working as a singer/songwriter.

Jesse Spencer

Spencer, who played Lord James Browning Jr. in 2001’s Winning London, is known for his role as Neal in Uptown Girls and Dr. Robert Chase on House. He currently plays Matthew Casey in NBC’s Chicago franchise, starring on Chicago Fire and making appearances on Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med.

Ben Easter

Megan Fox’s Brianna Wallace may have wanted Jordan in Holiday in the Sun, but Ashley’s character, Alex, didn’t go down without a fight at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas.

“I remember being a little bit nervous for our kissing scene because I was thinking, ‘Oh my God, she is my brother’s age and I’m kissing a girl that’s my brother’s age.’ And [Ashley] was so generous, even as an actress,” Easter recalled to Uproxx. “I remember she grabbed my hand and was like, ‘Hey, do you want to practice really quick?’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, yes please,’ because I was nervous too. I was 22 kissing a 15-year-old, which sounds awful but it’s professional.”

Easter reunited with the Olsen twins in their short-lived series So Little Time, which aired in 2002. After roles in Zenon: Z3 and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, he became a photographer.

Trevor Blumas
