'Outer Banks' Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Ready for more! Outer Banks became an instant hit when it made its Netflix debut in April 2020 — and fans have been eager for the next chapter ever since. Three months after the teen drama premiered, the streaming platform confirmed that a second season was in the works. "See you in the Bahamas ✌️," a post on the official Outer Banks Instagram account teased at the time. "Ever since we started, we always viewed it as something that was probably like a four season, maybe five season show, but definitely four seasons," showrunner Jonas Pate told Entertainment Weekly in April 2020, revealing that "Netflix had greenlit" the team to work on season 2 scripts "before [season 1] even came out." The final episode of the first season left viewers on a major cliffhanger, with Pogue crew member John B. (Chase Stokes) and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) attempting to outrun the police after Sarah's dad (Charles Esten) frames John B. for murder. Though they escaped North Carolina's Outer Banks, fans shouldn't rule out their triumphant return to the islands. "The Pogues think that John B. and Sarah are dead," Pate told the outlet. "So, we realized that gave us some dramatic possibilities that we could explore before we get them all reunited. We love that part of the show, having the Pogues together. That's when we feel like this show is working the best." [jwplayer rW2IbA9i-l3ahXupL] The producer continued: "There will definitely be some new mysteries and some new ideas. It all comes off the same spine of the same story but it branches out in ways that hopefully the audience won't see coming." Stokes starred alongside fellow Pogues J.J. (Rudy Pankow), Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Kiara (Madison Bailey), all of whom are returning for season 2. Cline and Esten are also reprising their roles, along with Austin North (Topper), Drew Starkey (Rafe) and Deion Smith (Kelce). Netflix released the first official images from the upcoming season in May 2021, confirming that new episodes will debut that summer. Though fans have plenty of theories about what messes the characters will get into throughout season 2, Cline hopes most of the audience stays spoiler-free. "I want people to watch this without knowing too much," she told Entertainment Tonight in November 2020. "I want people [to be] going into it kind of blind, [but] the stakes are higher and the mystery gets deeper." When Is it Coming Out?

Netflix confirmed in May 2021 that fans could expect to see more Outer Banks that summer. The following month, the streaming giant revealed that season 2 will premiere on July 30.

Which Cast Members Are Returning?

All of the season 1 stars — including Stokes, Cline, Bailey, Pankow and more — are expected to reprise their roles in the upcoming episodes.

Are There New Characters?

Deadline reported in April 2021 that Roots actress Carlacia Grant was tapped to join the OG cast as Cleo, a "confident and fearless" local "whose world collides with the Pogues." Lost alum Elizabeth Mitchell will portray Limbrey, "a long-time Charleston native" who masks her "toxicity and menace" beneath her southern charm.

"Gorgeous, talented cast. Incredible crew. Filming in paradise," Mitchell wrote in an Instagram Story shortly she was announced as a season 2 star. "And a character I can't wait for you to meet."

What's the Story?

"We've turned up the dial on everything fans loved about season 1 — more mystery, more romance and higher stakes," executive producers previously teased of season 2. "It's a full throttle, action-packed adventure. ... All we can say for now is buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride." 

Cline, for her part, played coy about what to expect from the new season — but revealed one major plot point. "There is a micro time jump," she told Entertainment Tonight in November 2020, confirming there are more "fun" and "shocking" adventures to come.

When Was it Filmed?

Several cast members took to social media in April 2021 to reflect on the process of filming season 2 after production wrapped. "What a labor of love this season has been. To the best crew in this business. Thank you. ... This isn’t an easy show to do, and for those that are there before we get to work, and those who stay when we leave. My heart is filled with gratitude," Stokes wrote via Instagram at the time. "It’s bittersweet, but I’m very, very proud of this season. Can’t wait for you guys to see it. Love you all. It’s a wrap. OBX2, here we we come. JB out. ✌🏼." 

Daviss bid adieu to Barbados, where the series was filmed, with his own heartfelt post, writing, "Can't wait for you guys to see the amazing work our entire cast and crew did this season #obx #obx2."

Teaser Revelations

In the first official trailer for season 2, Netflix revealed that JJ, Pope and Kiara believe that John B and Sarah are dead. The trio toast to their allegedly dead pals and carve their names into a tree to honor their memories. Meanwhile, on a beach in the Bahamas, John B and Sarah are alive and ready to resume their mission to find the gold from season 1. "Back in the G-Game, baby," John B tells his love before glimpses of action, drama and trouble flash across the screen, hinting at a very intense second season.

Big Surprises

Esten hinted that season 2 would once again see his character, Ward, up to no good. "I think he had good intentions. It's not that his intentions weren't good. It's just that maybe his judgment isn't good," he told Us exclusively in July 2021, shortly before new episodes dropped. "Every decision he made, he sort of doubled down later, and by the end of it, he was cornered. ... It's tough to write a second season that escalates from a season that is as crazy as that one. [Season 2] escalates in every sense of the word. It gets crazier!"
