Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth’s 'Beverly Hills, 90210’ Podcast Revelations: Everything We Learned From ’9021OMG’

It’s time to pull up a stool at the Peach Pit and start spilling the tea! Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth are dishing on all the scoop about Beverly Hills, 90210 on their “9021OMG” podcast. Spelling and Garth, who played Donna Martin and Kelly Taylor, respectively, for all 10 seasons of the ’90s drama, dropped their first episode on November 9, 2020. On their show, the two actresses will be watching all 293 episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210, for the first time since the 2000 series finale. “It’ll be fun to start from the very beginning, the pilot episode,” Garth, who claimed she remembers less than “90 percent” of the show, told Us Weekly before the premiere episode dropped. “And you know, we’ve got like 10 years’ worth of episodes to work through, that’s gonna be a while.” Spelling added, “We have everything that happened off camera as well that we’ll get into fun details. That’s the cool perspective, people got to see us on camera, but we were actually, you know, friends in real life behind-the-scenes. So, it’ll be cool to kind of merge those worlds and let [our fans] in on it.” Beverly Hills, 90210 also starred starred Shannen Doherty (Brenda Walsh), Jason Priestley (Brandon Walsh), Brian Austin Green (David Silver), Ian Ziering (Steve Sanders), Luke Perry (Dylan McKay) and Gabrielle Carteris (Andrea Zuckerman) Garth and Spelling told Us that they hope to reconnect with their former castmates and 90210's famous guest stars on their podcast. We want to have all our boyfriends on.” Spelling added that she’s confident that David and Donna are going strong in 2020. “They have a gaggle of kids. Oh, that’s my real life,” she quipped to Us. “I mean between the two of us, Brian and I have a lot of kids so yeah, I think Donna and David would have a lot of kids and be happily married.” Garth, however, doesn’t like to pick between Kelly’s love interests Brandon and Dylan. “I think maybe she would be on her own by now,” she told Us. “She would definitely choose herself again.” During the premiere episode of “9021OMG,” however, Garth couldn’t help but gush about Priestley. “I’d never really seen anybody like that, I don’t think. How the Actors Shaped the Characters

Garth didn’t love what she saw in Kelly during season 1, episode 3. “I don’t think Kelly was very nice!” she told Spelling on a November 2020 episode of “9021OMG.”

Spelling noted that the characters evolved over time: “They definitely were super smart in picking up the actors playing the characters really right away and started veering the characters away from how they were originally one-dimensional and depicted. … Kelly became more Jennie, more vulnerable. Steven became more Ian, funny and charismatic. [But] Brandon was never Jason.”

The actresses agreed that Perry was a lot like Dylan too.

"That character you saw a lot of who Luke Perry really was," Garth said. "They were very similar in their makeups. With Luke, you loved him the minute you met him, you were just engaged by his charisma, but it wasn't over the top, it was just like this really calm, easy vibe that he would give off to everyone and I think that Dylan did that too. And that's why America and the world fell in love with him."

The On-Set Nicknames

Spelling revealed that Perry called her “camel” while filming. “He was like, ‘It’s because camels have the longest, most beautiful eyes and eyelashes and that’s you.’ So, I love that name to this day.”

Garth added, “He loved you so much. I can remember him just gushing about your camel eyes.”

The Scary Movie 2 actress didn’t have as fond memories for Green’s pet names for her — “lamb chops” and “Chewbacca.”

Spelling explained, “He said I had so much fur [on the sides of my face]. … This is stuff that you never get over. [During BH90210], I made a point of telling him. He was like, ‘Oh, yeah. … That was cute.’ And I was like, ‘It scared me so bad probably because I liked ya.’”

Garth then chimed in to reveal that Green once told her “you can always tell a woman’s age by her elbows.” She said, “From that day forward, I have a f—king phobia of my wrinkly elbows. Thank you, Brian.”

The 'Sexual Chemistry' Between Brandon and Brenda

Much to Garth’s dismay, Spelling pointed out that many Beverly Hills, 90210 fans thought there was “sexual chemistry” between onscreen siblings Doherty and Priestley.

“In BH90210, there is a dream sequence that Shannen has about her as Brenda and Brandon and they make out,” Spelling dished. “We gave the fans that always used to write in about that question, we gave it to them.”

Garth noted, “I couldn’t watch those dailies.”

Giddy for Priestley

Spelling noted during a November 2020 episode that while nothing happened between Garth and Priestley offscreen while filming, her costar gets giddy when they talk about the actor on their podcast.

“They were always friends but never anything and every time we have talked about him so far, she gets fidgety!” Spelling declared. “You’re like a 17-year-old girl right now!”

What’s in a Name

According to Garth and Spelling, Carteris was very protective over how to pronounce Andrea’s name after there were inconsistencies in the pilot. The ladies also noted that Ziering still corrects people who mispronounce his first name in real life.

Tori Had ‘Butterflies’ Meeting BAG

“The only person I remember meeting was Brian,” Spelling recalled on the November 9 episode. “We were the same exact age and all of the boys were older. Well, Jason was pretending to be older to fit in. … I was totally in the pilot, crushing on Brian, and we had school together and he used to tease me.”

Tori Threw Up at the Pilot Wrap Party

Spelling claimed that Green asked her to go to the pilot wrap party in the '90s before the show got picked up by Fox — but then he “flaked” on her. She went with Doherty instead.

“Shannen and I got blowouts in Beverly Hills, we got dressed at my parents — the manor,” she recalled on the premiere episode. “I got to the party and I drank. I don’t know how I got drinks because I was 16. … I saw Brian, he was like, ‘Oh, hey, what’s up?’ Because he probably [thought] we’re cool and I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ So then I snuck drinks after eating spaghetti and I just remember the next thing I knew I was in the bathroom with Shannen and Tony Shepard, our cast director, and I was puking my guts out.”

Spelling subsequently got grounded by her mother, Candy, and father, Aaron Spelling, who produced Beverly Hills, 90210.

There Was No ‘Cattiness’ … at the Beginning

“No, I don’t recall cattiness in general. I don’t think any of us had those intentions, really,” Garth said on the November 9 episode. “We were just like, ‘Yay! What’s your call time? What’s my call time?’ But it all sort of went to hell after that.”

Jennie Describes Meeting Jason

“I remember thinking he was so handsome, so mysterious and so moody looking,” Garth recalled on the premiere episode about Priestley. “He was smoking cigarettes, I thought he was everything. … He has beautiful eyes.”

Spelling agreed, noting Priestley was “the opposite of Brandon.”

She explained, “I think he was too cool for me, I couldn’t even talk to him. I was like, ‘That’s Brandon, he’s the lead!’ I just stuck with Brian because he was my age and Jennie and Shannen. I stayed in my lane.”

Ian Made Jennie Practice Kissing

“I remember kissing him once so [Kelly and Steve] must have gotten back together for a minute,” the What I Like About You alum said on the November 9 episode after Spelling revealed Ziering made Garth practice their kissing scene.
