Every Time the 'Twilight' Cast Roasted the Saga: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and More

Vampires love baseball — and making fun of the franchise that gave the world sparkly bloodsuckers and cinema's most traumatic birth scene this side of Rosemary's Baby. Since the first Twilight movie premiered in 2008, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and the rest of the cast have given a lot of interviews in which they gleefully dunk on the saga. "It was like it was a book that wasn’t supposed to be published," the Lighthouse actor famously told E! News of Stephenie Meyer's novel in 2008. "I was just convinced, like, ‘This woman is mad. In a 2011 New York Times review of Breaking Dawn — Part 1 titled, "Edward, You May Now Bite the Bride," Manohla Dargis had this to say about Taylor Lautner's performance: "Mr. Lautner, whose pumped physique and flat affect bring to mind one of those friendly pizza delivery boys in a pornographic movie, remains a dish best served with as few words and clothes as possible." In the years since the final movie's debut in 2012, the cast has made many similarly scathing comments about the franchise. "As soon as [Bella] becomes a vampire, they kind of ignore their duties instantly," Stewart joked during a 2012 appearance on The Graham Norton Show. "They just wanna bone. It's the most ridiculous situation. You just had a child! Really?" That same year, Pattinson expressed his relief that his time as Edward was finally coming to a close. When Jimmy Fallon mentioned the fans' sadness at the end of the franchise and asked if the experience was "bittersweet," the Batman actor quipped, "For them!" Robert Pattinson

No one has had as much fun trashing Twilight as Pattinson, who, in his defense, had perhaps the most ridiculous role in the series — a century-old vampire who's content to dine on woodland creatures and repeat high school over and over again for eternity.

"It's a really weird story," he told W magazine in 2017. "It’s nuts. And the baby. And I had to give her a cesarean by chewing through a placenta. I don’t know the medical — how it works. But there was definitely chewing through something."

He also said he never understood what fans found "romantic" about the story's premise. "It’s not like The Notebook romantic," he told Variety in 2019. "The Notebook is very sweet and heartbreaking, but Twilight is about this guy, and he finds the one girl he wants to be with, and he also wants to eat her. I mean, not eat her, but drink her blood or whatever."

Kristen Stewart

Stewart has defended the franchise that catapulted to her stardom as often as she's made jokes about it, telling Interview in 2015: "Anybody who wants to talk s—t about Twilight, I completely get it, but there’s something there that I’m endlessly, and to this day, f—king proud of."

Most of her criticism has to do with how famous the role of Bella made her rather than the substance of the movies. "People are f—king crazy!" she told British GQ in 2014. "I would have been very happy just working from job to job, paying my rent one movie at a time. I never wanted to be this famous. I never imagined this life for myself."

Taylor Lautner

As Bella's friend Jacob, Lautner played the third point of the love triangle that dominated the movies, only to end up "imprinting" on her daughter. His main beef with the saga was the fact that he had to take his shirt off so much. "I'm always the only person with my shirt off," he told E! News in 2012. "It's not fun."

He also didn't love the long wig he had to wear in the first movie. "The wig, it was a very important costar," he joked to MTV in 2012. "There was hatred between both of us. It did not like me, I did not like it. Not fond memories."

Anna Kendrick

Kendrick, who had played Bella's human friend Jessica Stanley, joked that she wanted to "murder everyone" while filming the movies. "It was also kind of bonding," she told Vanity Fair in 2020. "There was something about it, like if you go through some trauma event. Like, you imagine people who survive a hostage situation, and you're kind of bonded for life."

Elizabeth Reaser

The Haunting of Hill House star, who played Cullen matriarch Esme, was just concerned about Lautner's overexcited — and often older — fans. "Taylor was just 16 and still a boy when much older ladies would be asking me about his body," she told Fox News in 2011. "It was just really inappropriate."

Kellan Lutz

Lutz played Emmett, the Cullen sibling whose secret vampire power was super strength. "I didn't like the script," he told Document Journal in 2012. "How scary would a glimmering vampire really be? It just doesn't make sense."

Rami Malek

The Oscar winner, who had a small role as an Egyptian vampire in the fifth film, was somewhat kinder than his castmates, but he still wasn't afraid to point out the more ridiculous scenes in the movies. "When they’re sitting in that chemistry class and Edward can smell Bella, that’s hilarious," he told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 2013.

Nikki Reed

As Rosalie, Reed was the least friendly Cullen, at first refusing to welcome her brother's human girlfriend with the same enthusiasm as the rest of her family. "I don't feel particularly sentimental," she told NBC Los Angeles of the franchise in 2011. "I feel like we're all sort of ready to graduate middle school and move on to whatever the next chapter is."
