The Power of a Group Workout

Natalie Thomas, Us' deputy news editor, is hitting the gym with Buff Brides author Sue Fleming (Katie Holmes was a devotee prior to marrying Tom Cruise!) before saying "I Do" to her beau of three years, Zach Friedman, on May 30.

My friends and I are used to bonding over food (and drinks!). We grew up going for ice cream cone runs and baking cookies — or sometimes just eating the dough — at home. My sister and I would delight over honey buns for breakfast and the occasional pancakes and bacon for dinner. In college, our days were filled with late-night eating and greasy diner trips the following morning. Now, we meet for more sophisticated food in the city, but it's not any less fattening. Well, kids, it's time to change our habits!

This week I gathered my girls for a healthy bonding session: a workout with Sue! So… okay, only about half of them made it! But those that did blew me away. Sue took us through the paces of exercises I've been doing for the past two months and my friends (all at various fitness levels — and one seven months pregnant!) not only held their own, but even cracked a few smiles along the way. And it was fun! For me, at least. The hour flew by, we encouraged each other and we even got a few words in (between panting, of course!) Afterward, we grabbed a coffee and rewarded ourselves with manis and pedis (where we really caught up). The perfect way to spend a day… calorie-free!
