A reflection of good taste! Shady ladies like Blake Lively, Alessandra Ambrosio, Reese Witherspoon and Olivia Palermo are trading in their cat-eyes and aviators for round, mirrored sunglasses … with good reason. While they follow the footsteps of luminaries like John Lennon and Prince, who saw the world through circular specs, celebs are reviving the shape with a reflective lens since they’re equal parts flattering and fun.
“People are always predicting the demise of the mirrored sunglasses trend — but the truth is, the trend is hotter and more influential than ever,” Robert Denning, cofounder and creative director of sunglass brand Westward Leaning, tells Us Weekly. “A lot of this has to do with new and more innovative mirroring technology, which allows for greater color complexity and more subtle hues. Today, mirrored lenses come in colors like rose gold and cyan. It’s not just the garish primaries or colors like ‘Neon Orange’ anymore.”
And while some may shy away from round shapes in fear of them being unflattering, Denning encourages you to ignore those old rules.
“In terms of tips for finding the perfect pair: don’t hold back. Just go with whatever pair you love the most, at first sight, and don’t worry about whether those sunglasses are ‘too loud’ or ‘not going to go with your other clothes,’” Denning suggests. “Think of these as your ‘cool’ sunglasses — not your ‘sensible’ pair. The more 1980s you look, the better.”
