Navy strong! This fall, take a break from your ruby-red mattes and your vampy violet glosses for a brand new shade: deep blue. Seen on the lips of stars including Olivia Palermo and Beyoncé, navy blue lipstick is a product proven to work for a variety of skin tones.
Palermo, 30, decided to take a risk by wearing the dark look in the City of Light on October 2. Because it was Paris Fashion Week, celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin wanted to challenge his client to try something new. “We wanted something out of her comfort zone,” the pro tells Stylish. “To be honest, I didn’t think she’d be into it, but once she tried it on and saw that it looked more editorial than camp, she loved it!”
To really make her lips pop, Martin kept the rest of her makeup relatively simple. He smoothed her skin with Charlotte Tilbury Foundation and Concealer, added some natural shine with Dior Flash Luminizer and flushed her cheeks with Honest Beauty Cream in Truly Thrilling. A few coats of Honest Beauty Truly Lush Mascara + Lash Primer made her eyes pop. But the hero product was Dior Rouge Dior in Visionary Matte ($35, dior.com).
Martin, the creative color consultant of Honest Beauty, reveals, “She never really does a statement lip. But seeing how well it worked with the rest of her outfit and her makeup, she pulled it off!”

Tone it Down
Daniel didn’t paint her lids or draw on a cat-eye for a reason. “I streamlined the rest of the face to complement her lipstick,” he reveals. “Any more on the eye would make it goth and hard, almost costume-y.”
Pick Your Poison
Choosing the right shade is simple since this tone is universally flattering. Just be sure to stay away from your sapphires and baby blues, and look for tones similar to the lippies in the grid above. “Navy is navy,” Martin notes. “Once you change the shade of blue, the effect isn’t the same.”
Pile It On (If You Please)
“Layer the lipstick depending on how opaque you want the depth,” he instructs.
Location, Location, Location
Martin suggests saving your navy lip for a night out instead of during your work day. “Unfortunately under fluorescent or office lighting, this lip would be way out of place for the office,” he says. “What made this work was the event she was attending. It was the Valentino show in Paris. You can’t get any more fashion than that!”
